Canon Canoscan LiDE 25 shows "USB device not recognized" on Vista Home Premium 32-bit

Point # 1 : Electronic devices are not made to be used sparingly or stored for long periods of time.

Point # 2 : 5-6 years is not 'barely' in-terms of an electronic device's lifetime (Given that the warranty for your device is about 1 year !).

Point # 3 : You obviously tried almost everything on the computer site of this issue, Its time to take your device to a service center.

My new hp dual core with vista will not recognise my lite on

Firstly, Nero is still, to my knowledge, incompatible with windows vista. i ahve nero 7 premium and it still wont work on my HP pavillion dv9000 (dual core with vista home premium). Roxio creator basic came with my laptop, if you have it i'd suggest using it, it nworks great! as for the "invalid serial #", locate the product key on the bottom of your laptop or side of your pc, it should be a blue-ish sticker. click the start button, right-click on computer, and click properties. scroll down to the bottom where it says "change product key" and click on it. enter the product key from the sticker and click next and follow the directions. if you have installed a version of windows vista other than the one that came on your HP computer, the serial # may not be valid for that version, you would have to do a system recovery with your restore disks or partition do get the correct version, but this is another topic. as for your USB burner, check to see if it's detected by your computer's device manager or do a google search to download a small program called "aida32" which will tell you all of your computer's specs and if it detects your disk drive. please let me know if any of this helped you out!

Lite-on DVDRW SHW-160p65 DVD-RW drive

Where are you looking to recognize the disks? if it is in my computer in Windows it would most likely be because the Roxio software was what was recognizing the disks. generally Windows does not do a very good job of recognizing blank disks. I would look at the disk information in your current CD burning software and see what that says.
