New, just installing and it printed off a collaboration sheet put in the scanner , [next step] and errors started to appear on the small screen turned off and on now error saying the printhead is not in properly etc has come up. the print head seems secure ??? thanks in anticipation of any advice cheers

The only steps you can do for this are to reseat the ink and printhead. Here are the instructions for the procedure:
Remove the black and color ink cartridges. Right above where the black ink cartridge was, in the top left hand corner of the printhead, push up towards the ceiling and you should be able to push a button that releases the printhead. Place the printhead right back into the printer and push straight back on the back wall. You should hear a loud snap. Replace the ink cartridges which should snap as well. Close the printer.
The error will either continue to show or not. If it does continue to show repeat the steps above a few times.
If the error does not show up, download the newest firmware from www.kodak.com/go/5300downloads so the problem does not happen in the future.
If you just can't get the error to clear, contact Kodak at 1800 421 6699 and they will probably need to replace the printhead for you.

Not too long ago I had the very same problem. After TWO days with Kodak support over the phone they had to send me a new printer. It has to do with the printer that only they can repair. Reinstalling software will not fix the problem, at least in my case. Hope it works out.
Print out a demo sheet. Press copy and photo at the same time. If the black isn't printing on this demo sheet, (the eyes on the two kids at the top are all white), you need a new printhead. Your's is probably clogged. contact kodak tech support. 18004216699. Option 1
If your product is still within the warranty period from KOdak then you can call them up for some step by step troubleshooting to help you with your problem and as well they can replace the printer if defective.
Try this first
Calibrate your printer, then print a demo sheet.
If paper is in the photo paper tray, remove it.
Load photo paper into the photo tray.
Fan the paper to keep the sheets from sticking together.
IMPORTANT: Do not overload the photo tray.
Load a maximum of 20 sheets into the photo tray, with the Kodak logo facing up.
Engage the photo tray by pushing it in until it stops.
Calibrate your printer.
Select Calibrate Printer, then press Start.
Wait for your printer to print the calibration sheet.
Place the calibration sheet face down on the scanner glass.
For the 5300 AiO printer, place the sheet on the front right corner of the scanner glass.
For the 5500 AiO printer, place the sheet on the left rear corner of the scanner glass.
Wait until "Calibration complete. Remove calibration page from scanner glass. Press OK to continue." appears on the LCD display.
Remove the calibration sheet from the scanner glass, then press OK.
Print a demo sheet.
Disengage the photo tray by sliding it towards you until it stops. When the photo tray is disengaged, the main tray is active.
Select Print Demo Page, then press Start.
Wait for the demo sheet to print.

To calibrate the printer right click on the printer icon and open the status monitor once you open it there is 3 symbols on the top right of the box one looks like a hammer and wrench in an x configuration, next to that is an i for i for about and a ? for help. Click on the x which is Maintenance it will bring up a new box which has 2 options calibrate and printhead cleaning when you chose calibrate it will print a calibration sheet which you then need to put into the scanner portion and press the start button, these instructions will also come up on the screen when you go through the process.
K...Trust the solution. Try these steps. Open the printer, remove the ink and remove the printhead (See User's guide). Reseat the printhead and the ink cartridges. The printer will come up with an error message that requires calibration. Do the calibration and scan the sheet that prints right after by pushing the start button. In the menu options, clean the printhead. Do one basic and one deep. Print a demo sheet (another menu option) to see if the quality has gotten better. If it has not call Kodak AiO Tech support. You will need a replacement printhead.
