MAKE SURE THAT WHEN PASSPORT IS CONNECTED, THIS MUST BE DONE WHEN PC IS SHUTDOWN TO BE ON THE SAFE SIDE. GO TO ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS, COMPUTER MANAGEMENT, CLICK DISK MANAGEMENT. THEN RIGHT CLICK THE MY BOOK AND MARK THE PARTITION AS ACTIVE. IF THE UNIT IS "NEW" , MAKE SURE THAT THE SMARTWARE IS INSTALLED. SURE HOPES THIS HELPS..............JEFFXC

Western Digital MYBOOK 500GB external harddrive won't come on. When it plugs in, the blue light comes on for about a second. Computer does not recognize drive.

It is "dead". If it is still under warranty (check 'www.wdc.com' for details), then Western Digital will replace it. If not, check their web-site, for their "Customer Loyalty Program", i.e., since you bought one W.D. disk-drive, you can get a discount on buying another W.D. disk-drive, if you order online from W.D.'s web-site.

Just plugged in new wd 1tb hardrive to windows xp computer blue light flashing on book front but no icon on computer

Brand new?

Did you follow the instructions in the booklet that were packaged with the external disk-drive?

Did you try connecting the unit to a different computer?

Did you take it back to where you bought it, and ask them to demonstrate attaching it to one of their computers, as a demonstration that it works, or to prove that it is "defective" and the seller must replace it?

No blue light or connection

i had the same problem & got an error message. was told that if you use a "power strip" some times the mybook will not get enough "pure" power and that it needs it's own supply. have been using a different outlet and so far it seems to be working
