This is due to a loose audio ribbon cable that the CD player feeds to the head unit. If you whack the console on the driver's or passenger's side (lightly) you can get the speakers to come back on. Problem is, it will only get worse over time. Under warranty? Take it to the dealer, they'll replace the head unit. Out of warranty, if you're handy you can pull the radio, find the cable and snug it in.
It sounds to me like maybe just a loose wire on the speaker itself. The radio could for some reason feed the speaker using a different wire, but that would be kind of redundant. I would take the inner door panel off and check the wires on the door speaker, pull on them a little and see if any are loose. If they are, you should be able to just solder it.
