Question about Projection Televisions

14 Answers

Philips 55PP8620/79 Rear Projection. Blue convergence has suddenly gone badly out of alignment and wont adjust. This was apparent after tv finally came on after two evenings of tv just 'hick-upping' at switch on.Regards Brad.

I replaced both convergence chips as suggested by your team, but unfortunately, the fault is still there. The blue cross flashes when trying to adjust, but does not actually move. I am thinking there is maybe a fusible resistor in the blue convergence circuit that is maybe o/c?? I look forward to your advice. Regards

  • baradda Jul 22, 2008

Thank you once again. However,as I explained previously, I have replaced both STK392-120 chips and unfortunately with no positive results.Regards

  • baradda Jul 22, 2008

    I have found and replaced 2x 0.68r (3149 & 3150).Blue conv is now way way out,however,
does adjust.Problem now is, chips get extremely hot,and I am sure, will blow if I leave TV running. Could I have damaged chips by not replacing the fusibles at the same time as the chips?? or else TV still has s/c in conv supply line? Regards

  • baradda Jul 22, 2008

Dan, there is 0.15vac on pin4 and 0.35vac on pin5. Is this too high?

  • baradda Jul 22, 2008

Okay. Looks like I am at a point where I need a service manual. Can anyone assist me here. Regards

  • baradda Jul 23, 2008

safemanuals.com only seem to supply 'user guide' and owner/instruction manuals, not service/schematic diagrams. Regards

  • baradda Jul 23, 2008

Thank you Battlesmith, but the link you provided only gives access to user-guide-instructions-manual. NOT Service Manual-Schematics. I already have the original owners/operators manuals. It is service manual/schematics I require.
    Best regards

  • baradda Jul 23, 2008

Thank you likha, but unfortunately www.eserviceinfo,com does not have a listing on philips 55pp8620/79 rear view. Also previous pdf of convergence pcb that your team member posted to me was of a totally different philips model. regards

  • baradda Jul 23, 2008

Thank you Votit for your info. Unfortunately the PDF you sent, high-lighting various resistors, is a totally different pcb to the one used in 55pp8620/79. Regards

  • baradda Jul 24, 2008

All of the information given by your team members was very helpful and subsequently contributed to the successfull repair of my Philips rear view TV. Thank you all for your invaluable assistance. Regards Brad.

You have to test the capacitor and the resistor in the circuit board. if not finad any fault then maybe suggested to bring the TV to the expert to check it personally (Philips service center in your ARea) and take what is there opinion.

Your assumption is correct. With the convergence Ics replaced, normal operation should have been restored. These sets may use low valued resistors rather than pico fuses inline with the power supply lines for the convergence ICs. Check all of the resistors in the area of the convergence ICs. They should test close to their ratings. You may find a resistor open. Please note that these are usually flameproof resistors that will not appear to be faulty. Look for anything tied to pins 4 or 5 of either IC.

Keep us posted on your progress.

I'm ging to guess that the resistors that were open were for the pins I listed. These ICs need to have the compound behind them. Usually it is white though not black. If there is no compound between them and the heatsink, they will get hot quickly. These will get warm anyway , but should not he HOT to the touch. Can you check the voltage on pins 4 and 5 to ground using an AC voltmeter? There should be no AC on those pins.

    Thanks,

    Dan

  • ABRsvcs Jul 22, 2008

I'd say that there is a lot more ripple there than there should be. Perhaps a glance at the power supply module is in order. Look for hte filter caps for those supply lines. I would have expected less than .1VAC total for either line. I don't have the service manual for your model, so I need to provide generic guidelines here, but I think you are on the right track.

After you replace the ICs, you need to do convergence setup procedure again, ensure you did this.
If you did setup procedure already, check that the pico fuses at the base of the ICs had not blown, if they had blown again, then there is an overvoltage problem, in this case replace whole convergence board or locate the fault.

Overheating is caused by the change value of the resistor ,there are 26 resistor all in all.Check all the resistor associated to the pins of the two convergence STK IC and also change the two big filter capacitor it is automatically defected , because of defected STK ,change it with identical rating. Also can cause overheating of STK is lack of silicon compound applied at the back of STK chip, also check this out.Below is the picture of all resistor are placed and the two big capacitor.Just click....

Panasonic PT53WX52.But the principle of function is desame because they are
using desame STK IC ,only the placement of resistor are very different...i have

Convergence problems are generally simple repairs, presuming you know how to solder and have a bit of brains about you. STKs are usually at fault (STK392-010/020/040, STK392-110/120/150/180, etc) and are easily aquired and replaced. Sometimes a fusible resistor is taken out in power supply circuit, sometimes a resistor will burn.

    Hello baradda,
Yeah i will suggest you to go through the board of your Tv because there is a possiblity of short-circuit of two IC's or probably a IC might have burnt in the Blue convergence circuit area my friend..So kindly find it and replace it which will surely get you out of the problem!..Thank you..

IF so then i will kindly advice you check the entire circuit board of ur TV if you find any Short-circuit please rectify it or else you must try to service you Tv in any of the nearest Service showrooms because only a Short-circuited IC or Resistor can cause Blue covergence or the reason must be a Fault circuit board which you must replace so!..Thank you..

Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both. Repair kits with instructions are also avail from www.TvRepairKits.com

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Blue Multipoint converge failure Philips 55PP9753

The most likely cause is shorted convergence chips and possibly a few pico fuses.

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony,Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer2_bing.gif Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get a convergenece repair kit with instructions from the links below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

Problem #1) Convergence

Yours may have one or more of the following symptoms...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
