Shuts off then flashes power light

I have a panasonic PT-53WX53G, I had a convergence problem, the picture was like in blue 3d (like a blue shadow). I got 2 convergence ICs from here. You sent me instructions on how to change them. I changed them and everything seemed good. I turned the TV on adjusted the convergence and was like new. Now after a day all of a sudden the TV turned off and the power light flashes 3 times pause then 3 more and so on. If i unplug the power coard the plug in back in, then the TV turns back on fine. works good for about 20 minutes then does it again. Can anybody help me with this problem?

there are 6 large capacitors by the flyback transformer way in the back of the tv where the pwer supply coard comes in. they dont seem bulged or discolored. there is white rubbery stuff on the sides of each capacitor. it doesnt seem like it came out of the cap. is it supposed to be there or is that my problem. if it is can you help buy the right ones?

  • Scott Lucero Jul 29, 2008

The TV shuts off when i turn it on. It makes a buzzzzing sound for a few seconds, the sound starts to come on then goes off with kinda a loud shreeking sound. then power light flashes 3 times.

  • Scott Lucero Jul 30, 2008

I replaced the ICs with the exact same part number that was in it stk392-110. and now i just changed the flyback transformer because i thought i might have messes it up when i pulled the 2 red wires out of it. but that did nothing it still does exactly the same thing.

  • Scott Lucero Aug 10, 2008

ill try those caps, is there anyway you can help get those ordered, which ones i need.

  • Scott Lucero Aug 10, 2008

i dont know what the heck you are talkig about, but i never rated that answer! So im not insulting you, but ewww oh well

  • Scott Lucero Aug 10, 2008

I am not ungrateful, i was very grateful for ur advice, i did not know if it was correct yet, i would have at least gave it a helpful, but it never even asked me to rate it, my original question i rated fix ya. there was another answer on here for a little while then it was gone. it was not from you. but i stiil never was asked to rate anything. the only time i was asked to rate was on the very first question. i rated fixya. i paid for this advise so dont act like ur going out of ur way, u dont even know its right answer anyway.

You have a short, most likely in the convergence circuit. Try replacing the convergence ICs first and let me know how that goes

good luck

Oh, I see that you already replaced the ICs, sorry, there still is a short in the convergence circuitry that needs to be found though and fixed

Have you done any hand soldering prior to install the ICs?
I would suggest to double check the solder joints again using a magnification aid of 2X or 4X.
If all the solder joints look properly solder, I would also inspect any other solder joint around the high power resistors near the STK ICs.
The next question is if you apply thermal compound before installing the ICs.

Are you sure that covergence ICs are same number and description ? In my openion, you installed compatible number ICs insteed of Original part and this is the cause of current problem in your tv.

I think this is a power problem, check the power supply for bulging or leaking electrolytic capacitors or other damaged components.

The white stuff is just the petroleum glue. Sometimes the capacitors will not show any visible signs of failure, is the white glue turning brown where it's touching the capacitors? It does that when the caps get really hot, and could mean a failure (although not always) The only way to be sure is to measure the ESR (equivalent series resistance) of the capacitors , which requires a special meter.

I still think the problem is in the power supply, the buzzing is probably the capacitors, they can fail shorted causing massive power draw and causing an automatic shut off. Replacing all the electrolytic capacitors in the power supply would not be a bad move.

Yes, my solution is rated "thanks for trying (70)" We don't get paid unless it is "Helpful" or "Fixya" rating. I just get tired of ungrateful people rating working solutions below what they should be rated. I apologize if you didn't rate my solution that way, I dont know if Fixya automatically rates it like that if you don't rate it yourself, but regardless, you could have at least rated it as helpful since it is probably the correct solution. But whatever.

The color goes out on my panasonic PT-47WX49E TV.

Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Below are more details for both items. Also, complete repair kits with instructions and repair support are avail from site such as www.TvRepairKits.com

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. The power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

What you will need to do is convergence. You can get a repair kit from TvRepairKits.com . It includes replacement parts, step by step instructions, support, etc.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.
