The computer says my external hard drive has this error: write protect Ox80070013. I will not allow me to write to the drive, such as backing up the files on my computer. It never did this before. Howie

Check Device Manager is clean. You may need to re-install a driver. Is this a USB hard drive or USB memory stick? Some devices have a write-protect switch (these can be very small!) - has yours got one?
Give more details on what the external hard drive is and how it is attached pls?

I cant get my computer to read my external drive

If your Operating System is Windows XP or Vista? Then disconnect the external hard drive and start the computer, and let windows load until at least a minute or two after your desktop appears then connect the External drive and open "My Computer" to see if the drive is shown there along with your internal Drive(s).
The above works to recognize lost external devices for me most of the time. Good luck.

I've just got a Maxtor OneTouch4 external hard drive - how do I protect it with a password ? Txs

You will have to download and install an application like Cryptainer LE Free Encryption Software 6.0.1. Windows 2000, XP, and Vista don't password protect individual folders.
