Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

Removing battery I am waiting for the AC Adapter to stay plugged in for 24 hours to see if that makes any difference because I did get a different AC Adapter today that would just let the LED light stay on constantly without blinking and when I initially plugged it in the orange "battery light" blinked then went off, which it did not do with the other AC Adapter being used. With the old adapter, I did try removing the battery and power up but got nothing but a blinking LED DC-in indicator light.

I replaced the adapter yesterday and have let it set plugged in all night. Will see what happens after church........and pray it'll show some results. :-)

Did my recent message about the possible CMOS battery get to you this morning? Just wondering.

  • Gary Barlow Jul 20, 2008

Any idea where I can get a new one?

  • Gary Barlow Jul 20, 2008

Radio Shack did not have one so I went to Batteries Plus and they made me one on the spot. I put it in and got no results. Back to square one. I read someplace that some settings would be lost but have no idea what those setting are or how to get them back. I was excited to think I had it made but disappointed when it failed to work. Are we SURE it was the CMOS battery?

I sure wish I had the schematics for this computer so I knew what parts I'm really dealing with. I feel like I'm just taking shots in the dark.......but I guess I'll keep shooting until I feel I've had enough......which for me ---- is hard to do.

    Any more suggestions or insights?

  • Gary Barlow Jul 21, 2008

Nothing happens when I turn the computer on. Absolutely nothing. Just the DC-In LED light begins blinking after all the other lights have blinked once and gone off.

  • Gary Barlow Jul 21, 2008

Same exact specs as on the original one that came with the computer. It's a duplicate!

  • Gary Barlow Jul 21, 2008

The label on the back of both adaptors reads as follows:

    AC ADAPTOR

    MODEL: PA2478U

    INPUT: 100V-240V~

    0.7A-0.4A 50/60Hz

    OUTPUT: 18V---1.7A

IS THAT WHAT YOU'RE ASKING FOR?

  • Gary Barlow Jul 21, 2008

I don't know what you are asking. What is tip positive?

Whatever that is it's beyond my knowledge.

  • Gary Barlow Jul 22, 2008

There are 5 circles and a square within a square under the output info I sent earlier. I would not say it's a diagram, just circles with letters in them.....as follows - left to right

    a circle w/an S in it w/a plus sign above the S

    a circle w/an S in it

    a circle w/an N in it

    a circle w/a D in it

    a circle w/an R in it

and a square with a smaller square in it.

Remember this is an OLD Toshiba laptop so the info might have been different back then.....like 10 years ago, at least.

At the very bottom it says for INDOOR USE ONLY w/3 circles under that phrase....one w/a + sign on the left a black dot in the center and a minus sign to the right. That is all the info listed.

  • Gary Barlow Jul 22, 2008

I haven't done anything to gain power other than plug it in and that doesn't work. Maybe I'll just tear into it and see what happens.

  • Gary Barlow Jul 22, 2008

    Is that a visible problem?

There is a diagram on you power supply. I shows three circles. Once circle has a minus sign, the other plus sign. One of the circle has a line pointing at the circle in the middle which indicates what the tip is in terms of polarity.

Tip

My dell pa 12 won?t start ?

When i start my dell pa 12up and it takes 10 mins to load to windows XP, , when the windowsloading screen comes up the FANS go crazy. I then wait till i’m at thedesktop at which point i immediately shut down the pa 12(which takes afurther 7 mins) while the FANs are going crazy.

answer :

Now if i start the pa 12 again it works normally.

I had to do this procedure everyday, untill today when i switched the pa 12 on, waited till the desktop appaered and i removed the battery while the pa 12 was on..
17028ca.jpg
Now when i switch the pa 12 on it powers up but i’m not getting anything on the screen

First try a different AC adapter (such as :pa 10 ac adapter)

If no change then the issue is the motherboard. Often the AC adapter will fail then the battery discharges and you get the symptoms youdescribe.
SO AC adapter then MB

It shows no power on your laptop but it shows you the dvd player led comes on then off.

I would suggest try the following:

1. Remove laptop battery, optical drive, hard drive and ram. Remove external peripherals as well.

2. Make sure AC Adapter is not yet connected to the laptop. Pressand hold on the laptop’s power button for 10 seconds to drain the powerflea.

3. Connect the AC Adapter to a known good power outlet, check ACAdapter power LED if it is on. Try to sense if AC Adapter is not makinga bit of noise when it is plugin to the wall power outlet.

4. Connect now the AC Adapter (hp dv6000 ac adapter)tothe laptop. Check if AC Adapter LED stays on when it is connected tothe laptop. If the LED stays on means the AC Adapter is fine. If the ACAdapter LED turned off check the AC Adapter pin that goes to the laptopAC socket if it is loose.

5. If laptop AC Adapter stays on after connecting to the laptop try topower on laptop. If no power LED comes on then this is motherboardproblem.

6. Before replacing the motherboard there is one checking needs todo. If you can open your laptop bottom part then good, do this whenlaptop is not connected to any power source. Try to reseat the laptopCMOS battery then try to power on laptop after, if still fails thenreplace motherboard. I hope this helps.

Laptop is turning on and off

Remove the AC adapter (Charger)

PROPER method is to disconnect the power cord of the AC adapter, from power; THEN unplug the AC adapter from the laptop.

Same thing in reverse to plug the AC adapter back in.
AC adapter is plugged into laptop, THEN AC adapter is plugged into power.

Unplugging the AC adapter from the laptop, while being plugged into power; can cause a Voltage Spike.

You may get away with it for years, and several laptops; and have no problems.

However it only takes ONCE, to fry out the SMD fuses, Multi-Layer Ceramic Capacitors, and Power MOSFET's, on the laptop motherboard's DC to DC circuit.

Jus sayin'.

Moving on........

AC adapter removed, remove the Battery.
Press the Power On button in, and hold in for a count of 10 seconds.
Let go.
Do this procedure 2 more times.

(Draining residual power)

Reinstall the Battery. Attach the AC adapter, plug AC adapter into power. Let the Battery charge 24 hours.
Then turn the laptop on, and tell me what happened.

HP Compaq NC8430: Laptop does not want to charge battery

Take the battery out, plug in the charger and see if the laptop works. If it works, the battery may be the problem. Check the AC Adapter
Check to make sure the adapter is plugged securely into the wall outlet, connected firmly to the adapter box and to the back of your laptop. Most AC adapters have a little light in them on that rectangular box in the middle of the cord that lights up when it's getting electricity. If that light isn't on, try a different outlet. Check your fuse or circuit breaker box and plug a different device into that outlet to make sure there is power to it. If it still does not light up, your adapter could need replacing. Also check the adapter box for signs of warmth, as it will generate heat when it's plugged in. No heat means no power.

Remove the Battery Sometimes it's as simple as a seated battery. Remove the battery entirely and clean out any dust, lint or hair that may be clogging the connectors and preventing a proper connection. Reseat the battery securely and make sure the little locking pins that hold your battery in place are securely fastened and there is no movement.

Batteries have electronics data that software has to get to properly charge it. Newer lithium batteries maybe different. But apparently, you have a work around for a lengthy use of the new battery.

remove external peripherals. remove battery. use ac adapter alone. check if ac adapter has sufficient power or check if ac adapter led is solid green or blue. if not then ac adapter might not giving laptop enough power to power up.
if ac adapter led stays on but some problem check the ac adapter - laptop pin socket if loose or damage. if not then replace mobo.

Dell inspiron 1501 work fine turn off last night now wont turn on

You mentioned trying a different battery, try a different AC adapter.

When plugging in the ac adapter to the wall, see if the POWER LED comes on on the adapter, then when you connect it to the computer, see if the LED stays on.

If the issue occurs with both AC adapters (No battery installed) then the motherboard has failed. If one ac adapter works but the other doesn't then the adapter is bad
