Swapping Dell motherboards

Hey,
My mother's video started acting up a few months ago, and Dell sent her a driver. Well, same problem a few weeks ago and they said it was the onboard video card and that she needed a new mobo. (BS)
So I swap out her board and it won't power up. Win XP - The lights go on for a second then it goes dead. Any help would be great.

thanks

Make sure and check the video cable to the to the monitor.
The whole problem was a faulty cable. The wire coming outof the plug on the monitor side was loose and causing an intermittent short. Thus the color going in and out,
I found all this out after the mother board replacment.
Oh well, Guess I should have trouble shot it instead of listeneing to the Dell dude.
    My fault.

If it is not the physical start button and the power supply is OK something you can look for yourself is a blown capacitor on the motherboard. They should have flat tops. The one pictured here is from a Dell 5150 Connolly E187242 motherboard that I am currently working on and you can see that the top is not flat but rounded. I am not an expert and it could be something else but I feel this is worth checking out.

Dell XPS 730 no video, not bios, fan running hard

Fist touching anything on the motherboard without a anti-static strap can kill the motherboard.

The fan running at full speed is no big deal. If you took out the video card
how do you expect to see anything on the monitor.

You need to plug the monitor you have into a working computer, this will rule out the monitor. If the monitor died, you did all this for nothing.

Now unless the motherboard has onboard video you have to put the card back in, if it does have onboard, even without the drivers installed you still see the post, because windows will let it run at post, and with the video card, it will still show post without drivers.

Do this, check monitor, try both ports and post back and tell us whats
going on.

You may be dealing with bad or overheating with your processor or memory. If possible, try swapping out your memory chips to see if that does the trick. If not, you will have to try swapping out the processor (much less likely you'll be able to swing that).

Your E510 has the Dell recovery partition on the hard drive, accessed by CTRL/F11 at initial boot up and it will restore the PC to the original factory condition (without need for any CD's). This is the best way to restore.
As far as the sound drivers, it depends on what you have. If you have the Integrated Audio (on the motherboard) then the SigmaTel R114282 is the proper driver (and you should ONLY install drivers from Dell for the integrated sound due to Dell's custom implementation). If you have an optional Dell installed sound card then you need the SoundBlaster Xfi driver listed on the downloads.

Dimension 8200 will not turn on

Try a new power button. Also does the machine power light turn on at the front of the machine? if so check that the CPU is seated correctly as if it has come out of position then the machine doesn't boot. I would like to think power switch though.

Thanks J
