click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

How do I format the external hard drive on a Macintosh computer?

To format the drive for MAC OSX

1. Connect the drive to your computer.

2. Open Disk Utility. (Applications folder > Utilities folder > Disk Utility). Select the hard drive in the left hand column and click on the Erase tab.

3. In the Volume Format drop-down menu, select Mac OS Extended *.

4. Once you have selected the format and have named the drive, click on Erase. You will be presented with a 'Are you Sure' dialog.

5. The drive will format and upon completion will be available for use.

Note: * For the best performance, we recommend using Mac OS Extended format. However, if you will be transferring files between a Windows system and a Macintosh, format the drive as MS-DOS (FAT32) or use a program such as MediFour

How can i unlock my passport without formatting it

This is by design. Western Digital and other manufacturers who offer encryption(locking) do this to prevent others from accessing your data without your permission.

If you wish to format the drive, you will have to unlock it, copy the files off to another drive or computer then reformat and copy the files back.

Unfortunately they do not have an option to unlock permanently without formatting.

Hope this helps FixYa,

I have a WD My Book Essential. I have been trying to format it to be compatible with my ps3 but nothing seems to work. I tried to format as FAT32 but now I have a message saying I have ''no writable disk...

Assuming PS3 works with FAT32, format the hard drive using the WD's FAT 32 formatter. Call WD and they will direct you to the correct download location for your hard drive.

I get the message to format the hard drive what can i do, i have all my dada on it!! thanks

1. Ignore the message.

2. (Recommended) Copy your data from that device to some other storage device, and then format your external device. Then move all your data back on the newly formatted device.

If you started a format, but it didn't complete, you pretty much cleaned out the hard drive.  go to start>right click my computer and click manage.  On the left hand side under storage, you will see disk management.  Click on that.  Now before we continue, I will tell you that if there is anything important on your hard drive....DO NOT CONTINUE!!!  As what I am about to tell you will completely erasse everything with NO chance of least not without spending hundreds of dollars.  Find your external hard drive on that list on the bottom.  Right click...delete partition.  Then right click and create partition.  Then right click and select format.  That should be it in a nutshell.  Hope it helps.  Please rate!

Try this. Go into the control panel.

Select Administrative tools.

Select Computer Management.

Under the storage setting look for Disk Management.

See if the partition information is available for your drive. If it isn't, let me know.

Disk is not formated.

You can check on Western Digitals website and see what kind of utilities they have for that hard drive as far as diagnostics, repair, and recovery are concerned.

You could try another computer and see if its doing the same thing?

If neither option works you may have not choice but to format the problem to get the hard drive repaired and working again.
