Question about Samsung HL-R4667W Rear Projection Television

13 Answers

Our Color TV is now Black & White

We bought this tv (Samsung DLP Hln617W) end of 2004 and have already had to replace the bulb. Now a couple days ago i'm watching and hear a pop and then the picture goes out, so i turned it off. Next day we turn it on and we have picture, but only in black and white (not a negative looking type of picture) just no color on the picture or any of the menu or control panels that are brought up on the screen. Any idea what might be the problem? Whatever it is, i sure hope it's not going to be another $500 repair. Thanks! While on, the TV made a "pop" sound, turn off, lights flashed. Turned the TV back on, and now it is a black and white (full grey scale) TV; but no color.

Of course its a hardware problem. This solution was worthless. I am looking for more specific advice.
TV is a Samsumg HL-R4677W. Everthing else is ok except the color. Is this problem caused by a broke color wheel? Does this model even have color wheel? Did a board burn out? If so which board would only effect the color?

  • sjdances Jul 24, 2008

I am not the first reporter of this problem, several others seemed to have experienced the same issue and I am hoping to learn from their experience. My goal is find out the possible causes, so that when I contact repair services I can get an accurate estimate of the repair cost.

  • sjdances Jul 25, 2008

Output is in black and white not matter what the input source.

  • sjdances Aug 02, 2008

The problem was a broken color wheel.

The sound you heard was definitely a blown capacitor inside. That's the reason why the tv is still functioning with gray screen. Otherwise, if some vital part was blown up, it wouldn't turn on at all. I had the same experience and it was just a bloated capacitor on the circuit. If you can do basic electronic soldering, that's good, all you need to do is check the circuit board of your tv and look for a burnt component. If you can't do it, bring your tv to the nearest electronic appliances repair stations. It won't cost you much.

1) check the voltage (with no aerial signal) on the collector of all three video output transistors (on the crt base) they should be +-5v of each other if one is different, then swap over this transistor with one of the other two and if color changes, its the transistor, If not then I use a 2k-4k wirewound and touch it from each collector to chassis in turn, and watch the screen (I use a mirror) each color should be equally bright with flyback lines, if not its probably the tube (CRT) faulty.

2) If all of tests are ok, then I find the three wires coming up from the the main pcb to the crt base panel and swap over the green/red and see if the color cast changes
If yes then its the chip on the main board, If no its on the crt base board, so check values of all the resistors there.

Hi there,

I know you're inundated and this is a little outside the box.

This is not a solution to your problem. It addresses the symptoms not the cause. But if the symptoms go away.....?
It will take about 30 seconds to try.

If you get into your 'MENU'

There is an option for Color Weakness Enhancement
- It allows a user to 'boost' the Red, Green and Blue.

To try it out:

  • Select it
  • Choose ON
  • Slide the color bars to the right.
If it doesn't work, oh well, there goes a minute you'll never get back. It was worth a shot though.

If it does work.....

Mike

Sir,

Be sure to connect this TV directly to an AC wall outlet. If the TV's AC plug is connected to a cable box or other source, it will not allow for proper cool down time. Also u must check out if any convergence ic's is working or not? so i think this is the main problem. u must replace the convergence ic's for better picture.

Thanks
Good luck

Since the TV still functioning got problems in color, There should be a further check in the capacitor , Even though playing from DVD player movie or CD movies it is the same output?

There might be some loss connection in some soldered connection. You can do re-soldered all the part in the board. just re-soldered it.

if not resolved capacitor near the vertical and horizontal board got leak.

I think it is just a matter of adjustment. see your manual for the color adjustment and brightness of the TV.

My response to this was to “reboot” the television. To do this, you must actually unplug it from the wall. Televisions and other electronic devices don’t actually power down completely when you turn off the power switch. Unplug it (after powering it off and waiting for the fan to stop!), wait a few minutes, plug it back in, turn it on.If still nothing happens then the problem like the black and white problem is probably a bad DMD control board. These cost about $250. So with a new lamp, I’m looking at almost $500 in parts only.
Try to the life hours of your lamp by using ,service mode on Samsung DLP TVs, simply turn your system off, then use the remote and press the following buttons with about .5 to .75 seconds delay between presses: MUTE-1-8-2-POWER. Once in the service menu, select the bottom item, Options, and from there you can reset the lamp counter.Never played with any of these settings. I’d strongly caution against any “curiosity tweaks” in there.

hope this may help;
Regard,

The pop you heard was a component suffering fatal failure. If you are comfortable opening the unit and looking around the exact component with be easy to spot. It will be the blackened one that appears to have exploded. This is usually very easy to fix, simple identify the component and its exact value and replace it. Look around it for any other components that apear to be damaged or look like they got too hot and replace them too. Even if you can not handle swapping out the parts yourself, You will at least be able to let the repair man know that you know what parts have to be replaced and how cheap they are. This will make the repairman think twice before over charging you for the simple swap job. He will know you know a little some thing and will be reluctant to price gouge you. Anyway, This is the best info I can provide by typing. If you need more help feel free to ask me for more help. I you find this helpful.

The color wheel went out. It is pretty simple to replace. I will find the directions that are online that I always give people to show them how to fix this themselves.

Samsung hln617w dlp tv won't turn on. Red temp

Had similar problem. Thought it was the lamp. Examined old lamp but it appeared to be good. Ordered a new one anyway. Changed the lamp but the TV screen would not come on. It would make the usual noise as it was going to come on normally but it would cycle 3 times & then turn off. The LED lights in the front panel would indicate a defective lamp. Then read about the ballast. Changed the ballast & still same problem. Tried starting the TV without the lamp installed & noticed that the color wheel did not spin. Removed old color wheel & discovered it was broken. This appears to be the cause of all of my problems. I wish I new earlier of the test-turn on the TV without the lamp being installed & check to see if the color wheel is spinning. Would have save money on the lamp & ballast.

My samsung dlp tv model#hln617w keeps turning off. Only stays on for 2 minutes. I replaced fan #2. Thunking that was the problem.

Why did you replace the fan was it noisey and did that cure the noise. These sets commonly have problems with color wheels-do you get motor noise at startup?

Numerous white spots on Smasung DLP TV

If your Mitsubishi TV has white spots in the picture , you can call Mitsubishi @ 1-800-332-2119 and request a free DLP Chip to fix the problem. They will send the New DLP Chip at no charge to a TV Tech in your area to install it for $200 flat rate. That is about a $250 savings if you had to pay for the chip . Call them with your TV's Model number and serial number and let them know when and where you bought the TV.
It saved me some hard earned money and now my TV is like New !

Black and white picture only

The color wheel is not the problem. If the spinning color wheel is impaired in its RPMs it will cause picture distortion, not black and white picture. If the color wheel looses any of its color fins, like if it is broken, there will be a loud vibrating noise inside the tv which you did not mention. Also if the color wheel is broken and doesn't spin, the tv will not start up.

The likely problem is on the digital control board or the power supply and should be referred to a local repair shop for repair.

There is an outside chance that you will receive color if you experiment with using all of the different input ports to see if you can find one that will bring back color.

Our Color TV is now Black & White

It could be the color wheel and in fact probably is. I've seen them shatter which would explain the noise. They are glass and spinn at 9000 rpm. An involved repair though definatley a job for a pro. It could be worse, probably a few hundred will do it. Was the TV begining to be a little loud before the failure? Could be a sign, i've seen many noisy color wheels.
