I would vote for the cooling fan theory. The engine thermostat is supposed to open up at 195 degrees and allow the coolant to flow thru the radiator. The cooling fans come on at 220 degrees and when the ac is on. A mechanic would use a scanner to watch the engine temp and see if the thermostat is opening at 195 and the fans are coming on at 220.
if your talking about the over head temp reading that is an entirely different system.the temps you show at 178,169,173 are all below what they should be,it should have a 195 degree thermostat in that engine, where did you get those temps,if you got them from the dash you should change the temperature sending unit. re-flashing a computer is done if Chrysler found problems in vehicles and would download the new info to the computer to correct them,
try skewing the engine coolant temperature sensor with a multi-meter and a temp vs resistance or voltage chart. the ect could be out of range and not set a code. also check actual engine temp with an infrared thermometer. hope this helps
the temperature sending unit on a 97 grand prix 3800 gt(which is also the coolant temperature sensor) is not accurate. the sending unit part of this sensor only sends info to the guage on the dash. the coolant sensor part sends info to the computer of the car. it is located under thermostat and somewhat difficult to get at. i had put a brand new one in and my temperature on my dash is all over the place---even with good thermostat and properly bled system. when i hook up a scanner to my computer, the coolant sensor is sending the computer(ecu??) what seems to be the right temp. anywhere from 194 degrees to 217 when hot. the guage however on dash go from 160 to 260 in less than 2 minutes.
It seems this is a fuel problem from the description I get on my scanner for these codes. Is there any way I can get a more in depth explanation than just what shows on the scanner exp. (P0125 closed loop fuel insufficent coolant temp).Changing gas cap and plug wires solved nothing.
P-0125 indicates that your thermostat is sticking open. The engine is not warming up enough to change from OPEN loop to CLOSED loop.
P-0171 indicates that you have a dirty MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR.
Replace the thermostat, and clean the MAF. Then clear the codes and drive it, and recheck for any codes.
I suspect you need a new thermostat. It should be running at 195 degrees F.
If the engine does not fully warm up, the engine can not go into emission control mode.
The engine temperature sensor sends a signal to the engine/emissions computer that the engine is now at normal operating temp. The computer then starts controlling fuel flow, EGR, etc. so that emissions are being controlled.
When the enigne is cold, you are in what we call "open loop" meaning no emission control.
Get the thermostat installed first. Make sure it's the same temp rating as the one that's in there. Either 180 degrees or 195 degrees.
