Question about HP OfficeJet V40 All-In-One InkJet Printer

CONNECTION TO TOWER

IN MOVING ALL I CAN FIND IS THE POWER CORD FROM THE PRINTER TO THE SURGE STRIP. I CAN NOT FIND ANY INSTRUCTIONS OR ANY OTHER CORDS BUT LOGIC TELLS ME I NEED SOMETHING TO CONNECT THE PRINTER TO THE TOWER. AM I CORRECT? HOW DO I GET A REPLACEMENT CORD?

Is pinter plugged into a power strip? Try plugging directly into wall. Make sure wall outlet is working correctly, try another item in plug in. Does printer have a power module or brick that is plugged into printer? That power module is there to protect your printer during a power surge, it may need to be reset. Is there a light on that brick or power module? If so, does it light up? If not, could be a bad power module. There is no such thing as "reset" button, so don't look there...It will have to be reset in a series of ways for an "external" module.
  1. Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  2. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet, power strip, or surge protector.
  3. If the printer uses a power module with a detachable power cord, disconnect the cord from the power module.
  4. Wait 15 seconds.
  5. If the printer uses a power module with a detachable power cord, reconnect the power cord to the power module.
  6. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  7. Plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet. Do not use a power strip or surge protector.
  8. Check to see if the power module or the power cord has an indicator light and if it is on
For an internal module:
  1. Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  2. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet, power strip, or surge protector.
  3. Wait 15 seconds.
  4. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  5. Plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet. Do not use a power strip or surge protector.
  6. Check to see if the power module has an indicator light.
Not sure if this will help you..but worth a try.....

Try this out:

Some printers require time to turn on. These printers may or may not give feedback in the form of blinking light(s). Wait up to a minute for the power light to come on before proceeding with the steps below. Instructions If the printer uses a power adapter (module), follow the instructions below. If the printer uses only a power cord, see the section below entitled “ If the printer uses only a power cord .” If the printer uses a power module Follow the steps below to ensure power is properly supplied to the printer:
  1. Check the power module part number against the part number listed in the User’s Guide to ensure the proper power adapter is being used.
  2. Disconnect the power cord or adapter from the wall outlet.
  3. Disconnect the printer data cable from the printer.
  4. Disconnect the power cord from the printer, wait thirty seconds, then reconnect the power cord to the printer.
  5. Disconnect the power cord from the power module and reconnect the power cord to the power module. This may not be necessary if the power module has a permanently attached power cord.
  6. Reconnect the power cord directly into a working wall outlet. If the power cord was plugged into a surge protector or power strip, plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet instead. NOTE: "The HP Photosmart 8100, 8400, and HP Deskjet 6000 series printer power cords feature a green LED built into the power plug. If the LED is not glowing, the power module may have failed. Proceed to step 7 below.
  7. If the printer still will not turn on or the power LED built into the power cord is not glowing, plug the printer into a wall outlet in another room. If the printer or power LED turns on when connected to an electrical outlet in another room, there is a problem with the power in the original room.
  8. If there is still no power to the printer, then the power module, cord, or printer may be defective. Try the power module/cord on another HP Deskjet or Photosmart printer, of the same model if possible, to see if the power module is functioning. If the power LED is still not glowing, the power module may be defective. Replace the power module and cord.
  9. If the power module/cord works on the other printer, then this printer is defective. Service your printer.
  10. If you cannot determine whether the problem is the printer or the power module/cord, or if another printer is not available to test with, replace the power module/cord first. If this does not resolve the issue, service your printer.
If the printer uses only power cord Follow the steps below to ensure power is properly supplied to the printer:
  1. Check the power module part number against the part number listed in the User’s Guide to ensure the proper power adapter is being used.

Please try the below steps that should resolve the issue.
  1. While the printer is ON, unplug the power cord from back of the printer.
  2. Wait for 60 full seconds.
  3. Connect the printer power cord directly to wall outlet ( bypass the surge / power strip ).
  4. Try making a copy, it should work.

Can't get it to turn on


If you are encountering power problems with your printer, please go through the following checklist:

  • Make sure the power cord is plugged in securely and directly to the power outlet. Power surge protectors can draw power away from the printer.
  • Disconnect the power cord from the power outlet and the back of the printer and then reconnect it.
  • Check the power supply box (if there is one) to see if it is warm or cold, as there could be a defective power supply issue.
  • If there is access to a voltmeter, test the power supply to ensure that it registering the correct amount of voltage (most Lexmark printers have a 30Volt output).
  • Make sure the correct power supply is connected to the printer.

X5470 constantly is powering on and off


Please try the steps below:
  1. Re-brick your printer. Pull out the power supply, black box where the power cord is plugged in at the back of the printer.
  2. Disconnect the power cord from the power source. Re-connect after 30 seconds to a different known working power outlet. Bypass any power surge devices or power extensions/strips and directly plug in the cord into the power outlet in the wall.
  3. Re-plug the power supply into the printer.
  4. Press the power button if the printer won't automatically power on.

4. Verify that the printer is connected to a power outlet that works.

Just replaced the ink cartridges. Printer keeps telling me to turn it off then on. However, it fails every time I turn it on again.


With the power cord connected and the unit on, disconnect your data cable(s) from the printer (USB, parallel). Press the power button to turn off the unit; wait 15 seconds and then turn the power on again.

Check if the error comes back. If it doesn't, reconnect your data cable(s) one at a time, checking for the error message between adding each connection. If you see the error, replace that cable.

If the error did come back after cycling the power when no data cables were connected, you have to look at your power cable. If the cable has a power module (box that you plug another cord into), make sure that you have the correct one for the printer.

In either case, unplug the power cord from the back of the printer (first) and unplug it from any surge protector or power strip (second). If you have a power module, unplug the cord from that and reconnect. Wait 30 seconds. Plug the cord directly into the wall outlet and then into the back of the printer. Then turn on the printer.

Check for issues. If the printer turns on, you may have overloaded the power strip. If it doesn't turn on, you should check the outlet for problems. Try using an outlet in a different room (preferably a different circuit breaker). (Move the printer and its power cord.) If the printer still doesn't work, replace the power cord or module.

If none of the above works, the printer needs service.

Printer keeps telling me to reinstall print cartrige. will not print any documents


  1. Unplug the power supply from the rear of the product.

I have a gateway desktop computer. Recently moved


Before you actually replace the power supply, check some other things first:
1. Wall socket
2. Power strip/surge protector
3. Power cable
4. On the back of the computer, where the power cable plugs into, is the red switch set to 115? It should be 115.
5. Make sure that the power cable is not connected to a regular extension cord. Power cable must plug directly into a surge protector that is not daisy-chained to another power strip, surge protector, or normal (household) extension cord. Surge protector must be directly plugged into wall socket.

If none of the above solve the problem, open up the case and ensure that all power connections are secure. Also check ALL other components' connections. Any loose connections can cause problems for you.

If everything is secure and the problem persists, replace the power supply.

Won't power on

      • If the power module or power cord works on the other product, the product facing the issue might be defective. Proceed to Step four: Service the product.

  1. Inspect the power cord for visible damage.
    • If the power cord is damaged, replace the power cord.
