It would be useful if you could describe what model of PC you have and what operating system you have installed (and its version).

Have you recently installed the operating system?

Have you recently installed any new devices on the system?

Have you recently installed any new software?

When do the blue screens occur - i.e. what are you doing when they display?

Can you copy down the information from the top of the blue screen - the first 2-3 lines - and post it here?

You need to run a regular format on the harddrive not the quick format then while installing the os make sure you dont have any peripherals connected to the computer example printer scanner or other devices. Only keyboard and mouse has to be present while installing the os after it gets completed then load the drivers and connect the other devices.

Hi,

First off, we need to know what the blue screen error says. You need to get the first set of "technical info" that looks like e.g. 0x000007e. To get this, Tap f8 when booting your computer and on the boot options menu, choose "disable automatic restart on system failure" this should allow the blue screen to stay on your screen and you should be able to copy the information we need to troubleshoot your bluescreen error.

Post your details here so we can continue.

thanks for using Fixya.

Tip

Blue Screen of Death

The stop error screen or bug check screen commonly called the blue screen of death (also known as a BSoD, bluescreen, or "blue screen of doom.

slasher_x_22.jpg
In reality, the most common cause of blue screen errors is a device driver problem. Outdated, incorrect or corrupt drivers can cause the system to encounter a STOP error, resulting in the BSOD.
Often, if you're lucky, the problem will resolve itself with a simple reboot and you may never have to worry about it again. More typically though, the BSOD is a harbinger of trouble and you may find yourself faced with another and another until you throw up your hands in frustration... but all is not lost.

So the easiest way to try and fix a blue screen error is to reinstall and update your system's device drivers. This is if you are able to boot into safe mode (Press and hold the F8 key during boot up). This will ensure that all driver bugs are fixed and that all hardware has the correct driver. If you know which device caused the error, you can update or reinstall that driver first. The file name in the blue screen of death can help identify the driver. Look for a file with the .SYS extension and search for that file name. There is a neat program on the net that can fix this problem, it's called DriverFinder, you can get it here.

If this doesn't work or you can't think or find the corrupt driver you could use System Restore (If it is enabled) to go back to a time where you didn't get the error. To use the system restore utility, go to 'start/all programs/accessories/system tools/system restore.

Sometimes though the blue Screen of death can be caused by faulty or loose rame cards. Check that your RAM modules are inserted correctly and arn't clogged with dust.

After using the computer for a few months or years, the hard disk gets fragmented with temporary files, or fragmented files. This will result in slowness of the hard disk and may even result in a computer crash eventually. You can maintain your harddisk by defragmenting your hard disk and deleting unwanted files frequently.

If you see Fatal OE exceptions and VXD errors then it is due to the video card. To solve this reduce the video display resolution. You can do so by going to the control panel and display settings. Choose the correct screen resolution to match your monitor.

My computer keeps freezing up can't move anything have to turn off manually. This also happens in safe mode. Sometimes I get a blue screen and it crashes. HELP!! I have no idea what is going on.

I would try reinstalling windows first because if its still doing it even in safe mode it may be a serious registry error and the easiest way to correct that will be with an new install if it is not a registry error it is a serious hardware failure such as a HDD or memory failure.

I hope this helped.

Thank you,
Norse

I keep getting a system dump/blue screen. i tried

You might have bad memory, a corrupted registry file, corrupted system files. Try starting up in Safe mode then backup your data. Goto My Computer and right click on the hard drive and select properties. Goto Tools tab and select error checking of hard disk on startup. Might need to reinstall Windows

you need to make a note of that blue screen you say you get when the computer stops working.. those are know as the infamous blue screen of death (no kidding) or as ms call it stop error screens..

make a note of the stop error code you get on the screen.. it's way to fast for you to see it.. you may be able to see what the stop error code is by going into the event viewer (as long as you have checked to have this events reported to event viewer in system properties> advance tab and start up and recovery area.).. look inthe event viewer (start>right click my computer>manage>event viewer) and look for system events.. you should see a white x inside a a red circle.. look for those error events and look for the error code.. it should give you something like 0x????????? post that error here.. or google it, it may give you an idea of what may be wrong. at this stage it could be software related or hardware related?

did you install a device recently? the driver is very comun problem that may give you a bsod if it's critical.
