The mute button and occasionally the hold button...is there a good way to hold the phone away from the face?....or to deactivate the touch during a call

The mute button/switch, is on the lefthand side of the phone.. It will toggle you iPhone to either vibrate mode or mute, depending on your preferred set settings!

My iphone is turned on mute how to solwe this problem

If your iphone is on mute, that means that you have slid the button at the top left of your phone down (you can check this by looking at the button and seeing if it is in the down position with a red bar above it). To unmute your iPhone simply slide that button back up. You can then control the volume using either the buttons on the left side of the phone or in the sound settings.

IPhone won't shut off.

From the apple.com website - the 2nd one worked for me:

If iPhone won't turn on, or the display freezes or doesn't respond
  1. Press and hold the Home button for at least six seconds, until the application you were using quits.
  2. If that doesn't work, turn iPhone off and turn it on again. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on top of iPhone for a few seconds until a red slider appears, and then slide the slider. Then press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
  3. If that doesn't work, reset iPhone. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
