You need to turn the knob on the gas valve (inside the heater) to the "pilot" position. Then, while holding a flame over the pilot assembly push down on the knob.
Gas should come out of the pilot and ignite. Continue holding the knob down for 10-15 seconds. Release the knob and the pilot should stay lit. If not the pilot generator may need to be replaced.
Turn the knob to the "on" position, close the heater and turn the heater on and turn the thermostat to hot. The heater should fire. If it does not fire and the pilot goes out, that may also indicate a pilot generator problem.
Without a pilot flame sensor signal the pilot light will not stay on and the heater won't work. Try Replacing the pilot flame sensor, the pilot flame burns on to it and it connects to the valve. It looks like a wire.
Hello, So the pilot flame stays lit after you release the pilot button, but goes out when you turn the knob to on. First make sure the pilot flame is a strong blue flame that is actually heating the thermocouple. If it's a lazy yellow flame, then it is dirty and will need to be blown out with a can of air with attached straw (to remove dust, spiderwebs, etc). You also might check the burner and orifice to make sure they are not blocked by a bug nests, etc and clean out as needed.
Make sure the thermocouple tip is not burn't off from the pilot flame. It should be a smooth rounded tip. If it's not, then replace it.
Lastly, make sure you're not turning the propane tank valve on too fast. To check this; disconnect the tank, reconnect it and then turn the valve on very slowly. Hopefully one of these solutions will fix your problem. Have a great weekend! Douglas
replace the thermocouple. it is a small copper tube that screws into the gas valve and goes to the pilot assembly. a good haedware store that sells heaters will have one. they come in various lengths 18"-48".
to thermocouple where the pilot light sits is either dirty/carbon out of alignment flame not burning on it correctly or damaged/broken which would mean replacement
