Thanks, John.
I'm afraid my statistics class was about 25 years ago and I am therefore
definitely NOT a statistics expert!
Do you have some links etc. to how these tests should be done?
And I see the point: how on earth should a unit that has averaging built in
(which can't be turned off) be compared to one that does not have averaging
built in?

and any via points you downloaded from mapsorurce then the 60c or cs uses these
points to recalculate the route so if you want a good route set preferences to
best route in 60c or cs. Jerry

kills the purpose to download the calculated route from PC to the unit.

Error of Averaged Waypoint
(feet)
WP test No. Garmin C-60 Magellan SporTrak Color
001# 3.2 11.3
002# 11.1 6.5
003* 5.1 2.7
004* 12.3 2.7
005* 9.3 7.6
Conditions:
# This reference point is under moderate tree cover and is about 1 m accurate.
* This reference point is in the clear and is about 5 cm accurate.
All test were about 5 minutes of simultaneous averaging.
The ST Color automatic averaging was broken by rapid movement before averaging.
As for the ST Color, the waypoint was just saved.
Although the 60C was obviously averaging, the Measurement Count remained at "0".
-Have to ask Garmin about this.

Here's some stuff I wrote up a few years ago. Probably way
more detail then you want. It hasn't been updated, but I have
done similar experiments with newer models.
http://www.ecenet.com/~jbonde/ intro.html
Here I am using more sophisticated (more accurate) GPS methods
to create a truth for autonomous accuracy testing. Similar to using
a survey control mark. Most people don't have this equipment, but
you can always get a good idea of performance by just repeating
a real-world use over and over again and looking at the variation.
This does take a fair amount of time.
For example, even if I hadn't accurately mapped the trail in
http://www.ecenet.com/~jbonde/ trail.html
just recording the track log with two receivers a number of times
and plotting the results could be informative. I did do this 80
times with a SporTrak Map and GPSMAP76. Because I had
an accurate trail center line I could compute real errors and
determine that the GPSMAP76 beat the Magellan about 90%
of the time, but even without this truth the greater scatter of
the Magellan data would indicate that it was probably less
accurate for trail mapping in this particular environment.

the 60c, but what i found when open that route on 60c is that it only
has 2 way points, the start point and the end point. So when i try to
navigate, it still runs its own calculation, then shows me the route
following the road. I wonder why it doesn't dowload all the routing data
to the 60c since the route is already calculated on PC. I remember in my
old Legend, it was trying to download as many waypoints along the route
as possible. Or am i missing sth here?
