Just wondering if this was a common problem any one
else has run into...
Got a new IBM Z50 a few days ago - like everyone else :-).
I installed the 32MB upgrade. I then went into the
System Control Panel applet to adjust the memory allocation
slider. For the heck of it I adjusted the slider to be roughly
50%-50% storage/program, and of course was told that the
max for storage was 16MB, and the slider would be
automatically set there. I then closed the applet. Then I
tried to bring up another applet, and got a message to the
effect of 'program not found'. All the other applets behaved
similarly. I exited the control panel, and all the desktop apps
had the generic windows icon, and none would execute either.
Only a hard reset brought the Z50 back to normal. Anyone
else have this happen? I do suggest if you try it to have a full
backup.
Thanks for any information anyone can provide.

allocate more than 16meg to storage and that my storage setting would be
changed to exactly 16meg. No crash, no problems. Just FYI...

The z50 won't let me go over the 16MB mark on the slider control. It gives
me an error, and resets the slider to the 32/16 point. It doesn't crash or
choke. Not sure why you are having this problem, but it is not universal,
although from your statement it seems prevalent.

I've read at least 2 dozen peoples' reports of what happens when they do it,
and every one said that they had problems... Are you sure you even have the
memory expansion installed, and that you even own a z50? On the E100 I get
the dialog saying that you can't move it past 16, but the z50 just chokes.

went funky and some shortcuts reverted to UUIDs... wierd... however I hit
the reset button and it has seemed fine since then.
You would think that one of the first things they'd test after they tested
the ram upgrade would be the memory partitioner...
?
Just doesn't seem like IBM to make crappy stuff like that.
I noticed that inside the battery case it has a canadian flag saying product
of canada... maybe it's made by some third party?

up a dialog box telling me that the machine can only address 16MB as storage
adn that the storage memory is being reset to the maximum allowed. Then it
continues humming along perfectly.

memory is not the bug. The fact that dragging the slider one iota past 16
megs causes you to have to hard reset IS a bug.
And according to what the post says, you can't even get back into the Memory
app to change it to less than 16 megs.
It's certainly not a "feature."

16MB RAM to storage. This is plainly documented in the z50 manual. To get
more storage memory, you need to use either a PCMCIA, Compact flash or IBM
Microdrive.

: else has run into...
Yes, indeed. I had this problem. If you try to allocate too much to
storage (I believe) the whole thing glitches. I don't understand why.
After mucking around, I have mine set to 12MB allocated to storage; 36MB
allocated to program memory. I can't remember how I arrived at that mix,
but it works so I won't screw with it. This happened months ago...

32 meg RAM, so I had just backed up my machine. It occurs when you move
the memory slider even *one* click past 16 megs for data storage.
This is a horrendous bug! I will contact IBM and Microsoft to see what
they have to say about it.
