Please check your speakers cable for internal short circuit-disconnect all speaker cables and test if everything is fine continue to connect speakers one by one until you find the bad one when you find it change its cable first and test then the speaker itself.if the problem still after disconnection ask for help from good service center.

How can i connect my laptop to a db790 amplifier?

All you need is a 3.5mm Stereo Mini jack to two RCA jacks. Connect this to the line or speaker out of the laptop into anything but the phono input on your sony. The phono input will be over driven and sound bad and possibly damage something in the system. Try using any other unused device input on the receiver.

RCA cable. It's called RCA when carrying Line Level audio; Coaxial when carrying digital data.

Does the sub work when you run speaker setup? It's in the manual.

I was playing some music pretty loud today on my Sony STR-DB790 and then no bang no crackling just strait to protect mode turned stereo off thinking nothing of it and now every time I turn it on strait to...

There is an output load causing the protect to engage, turn unit off and dis-connect the speaker wires from the back of the receiver, this will reset the processor ic. Now power on and turn volume right down, if the word protect stays off it means there is a short in the wires or one or more of the speakers. But if the word protect comes on with the "speakers and wires dis-connected" it indicates a short in one or more audio output ic's and will need a tech to address the extent of damage and cost.

Hi Kevin, This may not be a solution but you`ve most likely burnt out the amplifiers, I have the same model and its just burnt out the amplifiers for the second time. I was`nt cranking the volume and it was running my Bose AM 5`s which are very good speakers. Its expensive to repair and not many tech heads will take on anything "Sony". If you do have any luck fixing it please get in touch. *n.crookgto@bigpond.com* Regards, Neil.

I have disconected everthing from my reciever and replaced the main fuse but now have this PROTECT mode flashing then the unit shuts itself down.

It indicates a problem with the speaker connections.
Check that all connections are correctly done.
You need to unplug the receiver when checking the connections.

The output stage on one channel may be damaged or there may be a blown fuse for the side with no sound. If a fuse is blown, this is an indication of a fault condition.

Also, before assuming a failure, make sure that all the controls or setups are in their proper settings.
