The error message at boot indicates one of the following failures:

  1. The hard disk drive has failed
  2. The cable connections for either the power or data cables have come loose from the drive or drive controller.
  3. The hard drive controller has failed (Unlikely)
  4. The motherboard CMOS battery is dead and the computer is not saving it's configuration information
Troubleshooting:
  1. Open chassis, reseat the cable connections for the HDD and the HDD cable to the HDD contoller. Reboot system, see if it boots to windows.
  2. Run diagnostics on the hard drive, see if you get a failure code.
  3. Boot to the system setup, reset defaults and reboot see if HDD is seen. If it works, then after powering off, error re-occurs, the motherboard battery has failed (Watch battery on most systems can be replaced anyplace that sells watch batteries)
  4. If none of the above work, try the HDD in a computer that works, see if the drive can be detected/read

Hello,
First of all, if the power supply fan is not working it's better to replace the whole power supply. After you replace the power supply, if you're still getting the message that primary hard drive is not found, then your hard drive may have been damaged. If you have data on it that you need to retrieve, a technical repair shop may be able to get it off. You will then need to purchase a new hard drive for about $50- $60 and get it installed. If you don't know the procedure for installation you may need for a technician to do that.

Thanks,
Lolita

Your system can not detect your primary hard disk which host the operating systems,so you check the data cable to the hard drive and the power supply to the hard drive for supply

My dell d2400 will not boot up, I get the primary drive 1 not found, strike f1 to continue, f2 to run the setup utility

when the operating systems was setup on your hard drive, the incorrect partition was set. this causes that screen to appear. more often people will choose that way so that you may have full advantage od a smaller hard drive. this will not affect the performance of the system in any way. the fact that you have to hit the f1 key on startup is just an inconvenience.

After I turn on my computer I get a message that says; Primary drive 0 not found, primary drive 1 not found, secondary drive 1 not found, strike f1 key to continue, f2 to run the setup utility.

If you have a spare working hard drive to test in this computer, swap it out with the existing one. All you have to do is verify that a drive is found during the post. If you get the same message, I would suspect the IDE controller on the motherboard has failed. With the age of the computer (5 years), I would suggest getting a new or used computer to replace it. You may be able to find a replacement motherboard for it, but then to keep it legal with a Windows operating system, you have to locate a motherboard of the same make/model.

Sounds like you have a bad/disconnected Hard Drive and the system is looking for a second boot device (ie: Floppy with a disk) or your primary IDE channel on your motherboard is bad

Pc won't boot

In your system actually the hard disk is not found because of some loose connection; so you just try to remove your hard disk and then start your pc and shutdown it after 1 minute. and then just attach your hard disk properly.

Check all the cable.

Strike F2 to go to the bios to run the setup utility

Don't touch anything , save and reboot

If primary hard disk still not found

reboot press F2 to re-enter the bios

Look for Auto Detect Hard Disks

if the computer shows a hard drive is detected

set the drive to LBA if possible

save and reboot

Dimension 3100 Won't Boot

Make sure your HD Cables are all firmly plugged in, and that all drives are starting when you turn on the computer. You can tell with harddrives as they will slightly whine, and have a small, steady vibration to them. If they are all starting, and all cables are fully seated, check in your Setup utility that the drives themselves are Auto-Detect. If none of this fixes your issue, you may have to refer your computer to a computer repair shop.

Hope this helps!
