Would you also please explain what you mean by a "sketch"? It could mean different things to different people...

Some would think a sketch is a black and white outline of an object, which looks like it was drawn by hand.

Others might say just remove the color from a photograph so it cam be reproduced on a black & white printer.

I'd be happy to make suggestions if you would give me a little better idea of what you're trying to accomplish.

I look forward to helping you with this.

How to set up for black & white pictures?

Change the image characteristic to "Monochrome". See pages 110 and 112 of the Advanced Manual: http://gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/0/0300004730/02/eosrt3-eos1100d-im2-c-en.pdf

In general, you're better off shooting in color and converting to B&W on the computer. Just about any image editing program will give you much more control over the conversion than the camera does. You can control factors such as contrast and luminosity much better on the computer.

Can;t find setting for black and white photos on olympus x-930

The camera itself has no sterring for black and white. It has a "magic filter", but that gives you four template styles (wedding, pop art, sketch and pin hole). Page 27 of the manual, if you want to try it.....

However, most post capture software packages (except camedia, it seems) offer a black and white conversion option. Something like Adobe Photoshop would do it (but there are also cheaper ones out there).

How do i change a Nikon D70 to black and white

The Nikon D70 does not have a black-and-white mode setting.

However, you can take your photo in color and then use software to convert it to a grayscale photo. (Black and white implies an image with only those two values per pixel; grayscale can have 8 to 16 bits per pixel.) Most photo editing packages have a "desaturate" feature that does an automated conversion to grayscale.

The open source image editor Gimp has a "channel mixer" dialog that would allow you to approximate the effect of various filters before performing the desaturate function. This would allow you to experiment with the procedures if you do not have a commercial photo editor like Adobe PhotoShop. There is a special wrapper of Gimp that puts its interface into a configuration like that of PhotoShop; look for "GimpShop". The open source image manipulation package ImageMagick may also be used if you prefer working with command line utilities.

Many photo editing programs can apply "effects", such as sepia, "stained glass", water color etc. See if the editing programs you have access to can create this effect.

Programs such as Adobe Fireworks or Photoshop have these capabilities.

Perhaps just turning off the color will give you what you're looking for, but you may lose the detail in your photo.

Check with your University IT department to see what photo editing software is supported, or talk to someone in the Art department.

Trouble printing to photo paper

The paper you print on is not relevant. What happens is the green tint is the actual printer delivering all the colours to give a 'composite' black. On shiny photo paper this is emphasized where as on plain paper the colour is absorbed and shows as intended. So what can you do? Move away from black and go for a tint such as sepia.
