Question about Garmin nuvi 200W GPS Receiver

1 Answer

Memory full Hi maza13.... thanks... sounds like you are on track.... but after I've got my Garmin plugged into the computer and found the Garmin file, how do I find the "Help" file and the languages files? I found the list of new files which show the data downloaded last night is there.... and they are listed as system files.... but I'm guessing the one(s) I need are in the original 2007 files? Which one? I think getting rid of the excess languages files would be the simplest place to start? Thanks, Earlayne

****HELPFUL HINT**** Before you do anything with the Garmin unit, you might want to make a folder somewhere on your computer and name it something like NUVI CONTENTS. Then copy and paste or drag and drop, however you want to do it, all the contents of your NUVI. This way if you do something you didn't mean to, like delete a language, you can just put it back in.

Now what you need to look for are 3 folders, one is the HELP folder which is pretty useless once you get the hang of the Garmin unit. As a matter of fact I never even used the HELP button on the Garmin unit, because it's so easy to use.

The other folder is the VOICE folder, open it and start deleting the languages you are not likely to use or need. Make sure you DO NOT delete American English, unless you want to stick to British English. Of course I am assuming you need English, but regardless it goes for whichever language you want to keep. Assuming you are keeping American English these are the names of the files you need to keep in the VOICE folder english_american_.sum and English_American_.vpm.

The last folder is the TEXT folder, open it and delete all the files if you want. American English is the default so it won't go away, but regardless you'll have a back up anyways...RIGHT? LOL

I hope this helps you, and if you have any questions lay them on and I'll see what I can do for you. But I will say that I just bought my Nuvi back in April of this year so I am still learning a lot about it. I am working on tweaking the XML file so that it will ready more than 1 map on the SD, right now we are limited to 1 map per SD card.

I am so sorry I could not get back to you any sooner...but the excess languages in the text and speech folders are the first to go.

Garmin dakota 10 does not free up memory

Connect your dakota 10 to your computer ,double click on my computer or computer on deskstop and you will see garmin storage. And then double on garmin F .double click on garmin folder and if you want to delete gpx files click on gpx ,you can see current, archive and track log you've saved. Then you can delete tracklog you've saved .But some tracklog were automatically saved in archive folder ,double click folder and you can delete gpx file.In the same way if you double click on current folder you can see current gpx file and you can delete it.Like that you can delete image file in the same way.One important is you must not delete system files or folder.

I just got the Map Update 2008 City Navigator North America NT and did an install of the US on my Garmin 530c. I realized that it did not include Canada cause the 530 does not have enough internal memory....

Using "My Computer" with the Garmin connected to your computer you should be able to right click on the garmin and choose properties, this will tell you how much space you have on there. If it's full (sounds like it is) you should remove some files from it to make room. Garmin indicates that you should be careful what you delete, especially in ther garmin folder. Not having one of these units I can't tell you what you can and cannot delete but if you send me a listing of the files on it I may be able to clarify.

7200 won't hold full North America upgrades. Can memory be increased?

Try this: Maximize your GPS Memory Your Garmin StreetPilot 7200 has limited storage space for waypoints, routes, and tracks. Once you reach that limit, your GPS can't hold any more data. Smart ExpertGPS users have figured out how to eke out every last bit of memory space on their Garmin GPS receivers. Before each outdoor adventure or visit to a project site, they use ExpertGPS to back up the contents of their GPS, and then clear the GPS data memory. They can then download as much data as possible onto their GPS (leaving some room for GPS data collection out in the field). When they get back, they use ExpertGPS to upload all of their Garmin waypoints, routes, and tracks onto their computer and save it. Once they've backed up the new data from their GPS, they can clear the memory again, keeping their GPS ready for their next trip.

Garmin nuvi 610 memory full

You can attach the unit to your computer and then delete some information like extra voices, languages, help files, pictures, etc. You can also delete from the gps menu old locations and favorites.
Make sure you make a copy of everything first before you delete anything.
Thanks for using FixYa

Buzzing noise when i turn off Garmin 60CSx

This problem is Mac OSX related and can be solved using Cleaneject http://www.javawa.nl/cleaneject_en.html
The OSX operating system creates several invisible files and folders on USB-disks, camera's and GPS devices and the Garmin GPS devices can't cope with these invisible files and folders.
Cleaneject erases the invisible files and folders.

Says memory full and will not work

Hi dogman33, This is a common problem with the nuvi 660s with older firmware. Garmin's solution is to perform a "hard reset" and to upgrade the device firmware. Upgrading firmware is an easy procedure, just visit Garmin's website (www.garmin.com) and download the software called WebUpdater. Run that and follow its directions. Here is how you can perform a hard reset to clear all your waypoint memory: MAINTENANCE MODE: Step 1. Turn your Nuvi unit off, remove any SD cards from the SD card slot and make sure that the unit is not plugged into any computer. Step 2. Place a fingertip on the upper left hand corner of the touch screen and keep it there while turning the unit on, a prompt should read " Do you really want to start in maintenance mode?" Step 3. Select the yes button. Step 4. Enter your PIN if enabled. Step 5. Main Maintenance Mode screen should have 4 selections: System information View Diagnostics Clear User data Clear Waypoints Step 6. Choose "Clear Waypoints". After some time the unit should reboot. Hope this is helpful! spydee
