Ian:
Sorry to say this, but "clicking" is usually a sign that the hard drive has head-crashed and has failed.
If there is information that you absolutely have to have off of the drive, immediately disconnect the drive and stop using it to preserve any data that might still be on the drive. Once you have secured the drive, you should contact a drive recovery company like DriveSavers.
My only connection with DriveSavers is that I've been their customer in the past and they were excellent to work with.
Contact DriveSavers Data Recovery at their web site (http://www.drivesaversdatarecovery.com/) or call them free at 1-800-440-1904. They will guide you as to the best solution for retrieving your data.
Thanks for using FixYa.
Test all leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions,IDE,SATA
the leads from your ((motherboard to your hard drive)) make sure they have a secure connection and are not faulty or just replace them they might be faulty make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections and are not faulty even the electical extensions even something as small as an electrical fan and its lead can cause this problem or just replace them they could be faulty a computer needs all electrical power and data to continue through every working device and to have an end so any faulty leads will end up with a computer error
hope this helps you
