Question about PC Desktops

1 Answer

I had to reinstall windows xp home edition on my dads pc after a virus completly disabled his system. I am now having problems connecting to the internet. It's a Dell pc with ntl broadband (usb through the set top box). I keep getting the error message vtruck dbg has encountered a problem and needs to close, every time I put the broadband intall cd in, so can't set up a connection. Also when I ran a diagnostics test, the network adapter and DHCP Server both failed on the test. What do I do now?

Thanks so much, I can get an internet connection now and everything seems to be working, apart from the shift keys on the keyboard. I was trying to set up the email account but when I come to type @ on my dads keyboard it just types ' . But everything else seems to be working fine. Thanks.

    Any ideas about the keyboard?

Completing a recovery without a disk?

This is a common virus attack that will throw you out everytime you login, or licensing issues

For virus problem is bit tricky and needs to deal with registry settings and also need network computer

Try following

Log on to a networked computer.
Run Regedit.exe
Point your cursor to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Select File > Connect Remote Registry
Type computer name (infected computer)
Navigate to the following location in registry of destination or infected computer

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Edit below two values in right pane:

Shell
Userinit

Change the two values to
Shell=explorer.exe
Userinit = c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe
close the Registry
Restart Infected computer.
You should be able to log on to computer. if it not work then go to back steps and just copy and overwrite the file userinit.exe from installation source.

Will power up but theres no picture

I'd first check that you have the hard drives installed correctly as you can have a primary and secondary drive ect. If you need any of the files I'm unsure but If you don't mind those files deleted you could reinstall windows xp. But from a different computer you could get the drivers needed for xp. Install the operating system xp for example and then from another computer dvd drivers such as network(Probably the most important) you can add those and reconnect to the internet and from there download the other drivers directly (IE video drivers). At least check the hard drive connections to see that they are the way you want them. Hope that helps somewhat.

Having problems with windows rootsystem32hal.dll. what the big problem is i dont know if it came with windows xp home edition or if you can reinstall bujt using f12 or do i need a cd?

One of the key design features of Windows is that it supports multiple hardware platforms without the need for complete different versions of the OS. This support is accomplished through the Hardware Abstraction Layer(hal.dll)
You can extract the hal.dll from your Windows Xp Installation CD to the System32 folder through the recover console.

Pro tools m-powered problem

You may need to check to see which "service pack" you are currently on.

See below requirements:

System Software — Windows XP & Vista
  • Windows Vista Business or Ultimate Edition
    • 32-bit OS Installation Only
  • Windows XP Professional or Home Edition
    • With Windows XP Service Pack 2 or Service Pack 3

  • Not Supported:
    • Windows Vista 64-bit (any version)
    • Windows XP Professional x64 Edition
    • Windows XP Media Center Edition
    • Windows 98, Me, 2000, NT, 95, 3.1, DOS

  • Not Tested:
    • Windows Vista Home and Home Premium Edition
    • Although Windows Vista Home and Home Premium Edition have not been tested or qualified by Digidesign, there are currently no known issues with Vista Home and Home Premium 32-bit operating systems and Pro Tools M-Powered 7.4 compared to the supported Windows Vista Business or Ultimate Edition operating systems.

Windows Vista SP1
There are currently no known issues with Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista based on our initial limited testing and customer feedback. Although full qualification with all Digidesign products has not been completed, we do not recommend against updating to SP1, given the number of important overall system fixes in SP1. We do recommend that you backup your system and create a restore point before updating to SP1, should you encounter any problems after installing the update.

Want to run XP Home Edition on my DigiPos PowerPos.

So if I get your scenario straight, you installed xp on the drive in another computer? That won't work. Windows 98 it worked fine, windows would just reinstall all the system drivers but with XP it won't work unless the chipsets are the same and even then it's iffy. You need to install a cd drive to the POS system for the sole purpose of installing windows xp. All you need to do is get an IDE cable with two ports on it, plug one into the cdrom drive (make sure it is jumpered to slave) and one into the HD (master), plug it into the ide port on the motherboard, install XP, then you can remove it when finished.

Thanks and please take a moment to rate this solution with a fixya rating.

Windows xp home edition reinstall

If you use his disk, that will be better, because if it is original HP disk, it should install all original drivers at all, however this may delete all files on the computer depending on the type of installation you do.

Installing an older version of XP home does not make a big difference , as windows will update the system using automatic updates. What must be done, is ensuring that all proper drivers are installed.

Check device manager, in control panel/system, and see if all devices are installed with proper drivers.
