Question about GE 30 in. Profile JGP979 Gas Cooktop

Exhaust turns on automatically in burner mode

I have modular GE PGP 979 gas cooktop. This cooktop allows me to to replace two left side burners with a grill. When the grill is in use in place of burners, the exahust turns on automatically, which I think is normal. But lately, even when burners are working, the exhaust turns on authomatically pulling the flames away. Any guesses, what could have gone wrong? Something that is easy to check and fix?

Thanks

I am fine with the way it should work, but I don't think it's working that way for me. The fan is mandatory for the grill and optional for the burners. In my case, for the last few months, the fan comes on always, whether I am using the grill or the burners. That tells me, whatever in the stove that detects grill or burners is being used, is broken and always detects burners as grill.

    Thanks.

Hello
I have the one with the 4 burners and the grill, and when the grill in on the fan has to come on, and it does automaticly, but once you finish with the grill you have to change it back to stove mode by putting the 2 burners back or the fan will allways go on when you turn the switch. It is a safety regulation for the fan to be on with the grill to avoid the fumes......I know I hate that too.
Hope this help

It does this by design. It is a safety feature on this model because it was designed to have a gill module on the left side. I don't know if you can change it without replacing the two left control valves with valves like it has on the right burners.

Should I buy a two burner unit if available? Or a new cooktop?

Yes you can as long as there ae two heat controls for the grill side of the stove/cooktop. That allows one burner control for each of the burners. You should be able to order directly from GE but I would also check out repairclinic.com since they normally sell OEM GE parts cheaper than you can buy them from GE. At least check out the price at both sources beforw purchasing.

Exhaust fan comes on when burner turned on

The left side is set for your grill. There is apparently a switch under the left side top / front of the cooktop. The aeration tray has a prong on one end that fits into a hole in the front end of the burner basin and activates the switch which stops the fan from coming on when using the burners and allows the fan to run when using the grill. Try switching sides with the aeration trays as one might make better contact than the other.

It is not a GE but it is a Jenn-air

It's either a bad spark module or switch.

Ge profile ceramic electric cooktop

No recalls that I know of.  The switch for that burner has shorted and will need to be replaced.  It will be fine once it is repaired.
