Question about SmartDisk 250GB SMARTDISK CROSSFIRE EXT Hard Drive

1 Answer

External drive seems to freeze up everything, including desktop when USB plugged in

I have a lot of info that I need on this drive. The green light is on when power plugged in and seems to be working. If I plug in the USB cord to my desktop, everything freezes and the green light goes on an off and nothing is being read; although there is noise from the drive as if something is happening. If I have everything plugged in (USB, power supply) and turn on the unit, everything freezes and the green light goes on and off... again, the drive is making noise like it is trying to read, but nothing happens. Any ideas?

Part two to my previous post. After just walking away and just letting it stay for a while, I check out everything and it shows the drive is there and supposedly working properly through device manager. When I look on "my computer" it is just listed as "local disk" and not formally named by brand as it usually was. I right clicked on it and my computer froze for a while and then eventually a message "Disk in Drive "X" is not formatted, Do you want to format it now?" Yes or No... I don't think this is good... Help?!

One more addition! :) I meant to say double clicked not right clicked on the drive while in "My Computer" before the freeze and formatting message...

Do not panic. The problem is with the controller in the external case and not the HD itself. Open the case and remove the hard drive. Bring it to circuit city or best buy and invest in a new HIGH QUALITY external case for your hard drive. An associate at either of these stores will be able to tell you the exact case you will need.(SATA,E-IDE,IDE,ect...) DO NOT BUY the cheapo $10 cases you can get on the net. There is a reason some cases cost more then others and the main reason is the quality of the internal components and the durability of them. Install Your HD in your new case(very simple) and you will be up and running in no time.
I Hope this helps you out and you appreciate my help enough to remember to rate me FixYa when you are all fixed up.

as always my help is free...This is my hobbie...

My drive stopped connecting. Green light blinking fast

Try plugging it in to a different computer.
If it still fails, then the problem either is:
* power-supply (most external drives that have a 3.5-inch disk-drive inside require a power-supply; most that have a 2-inch disk-drive inside draw power from the USB port),
* adapter inside the external case (convert USB interface to SATA interface of the disk-drive) is failing,
* disk-drive inside the external case is failing.

Your best hope is that the disk-drive is OK.
Remove it from inside the external case,
and attach it as a "slave" disk-drive inside some desktop computer, and copy the files.

My Iomega LDHD250U 250 GB USB External Hard Drive's Power and Usb ports WILLNOT CONNECT!!!!!!! Please help ive been trying to figure out why all day.

Dear Friend, Your I-Omega case might be bad or the controller inside that connects everything. I suggest you to get: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Apricorn-Universal-Hard-Drive-Adapter/10811435. and pulled your hard drive enclosure apart, then removed your hard drive and connect with the external adapter. Usually comes with a SATA or IDE connector for data and power adapter. After connecting everything plug into your PC and it should be able to recognize.
Good Luck#

My buffalo ministation 3.0 external hard drive wont be recognised by my comuter. to be honest i dropped it, but when i plug it into computer green light starts flashing, after a while fashing stops green...

My ministation was doing the same, beeping and flashing green light after a light drop on the floor. Soo... I took my ministation usb drive out of the plastic enclosure and smacked it on the table a few times. Plugged it in and it spun back up!! Now my computer recognizes it and everythings working smooth! I assume something with the drive became jammed and the couple smacks loosened the drive head.. Anyway, if all else fails... beat it!

Rocstor external harddrive disappears from desktop. Why?

click start control panel administration tools computer management device manager look through all of your devices if you see a yellow question mark?or exclamation mark ! or red x
right click to reinstall drivers or

if you can see your usb but its not working
ports(com&lpt)right click update driver

sometimes the wires inside the cable will be damaged due to bending or stretching or placing heavy equipment upon the cable

just replace the cable of the hard disk, when you plugged the external disk drive you got that windows could recognize the USB device change the cable everything should work fine again,

check the USB leads that attach to the motherboard usually red-white-green-black make sure they are securely seated and have no dust build up on them dust will cause static and a lot of unforeseen problems

if this fails to fix the problem
you might have to install a usb 2 or 3 card they are cheap and easy to install you can buy these on Ebay very cheap
hope this helps

a cnet rview
Pros: Lots of space, very low price, doesn't require outside power
Cons: Sometimes stops working, no firewire (but still a quick transfer speed)
Summary: This doesn't require outside power, but sometimes you need to hook it up to 2 USB ports. The USB cable has 2 heads. Sucks when I only have 3 USB ports on my laptop.

Also sometimes it spontaneously stops communicating with the computer. I don

I have a Seagate Free Agent Desktop External Hard Drive. I cannot get any of my computers to access the drive. I fear the drive has crashed.

get linux puppy and boot the cd while your hard drive is plugged in, if you can mount under puppy linux and see your info choose the info you need and offload onto an external usb, copy the files over, dont move them as if disk is corrupt you could lose info, then reformatt the drive, just to let you know there seems to be alot of hard drive issues with seagate lately
