Help me to install WinXP in a Gateway Laptop that came with SATA HDD

On trying to install WinXP in my Gateway Laptop Model MA7 that came with 160GB SATA HDD, the message I get during Window Startup is HDD not found. I've gone through the BIOS setup and set all the parameters as described to install WINXP without success. Please assist me on what to do.
The machine installs Windows Vista without difficulty but I want to stick with XP as some of my peripherals has no Vista driver.
Thanks as I await your sollutions.

You have probably already fixed this but maybe others can find this a little helpful. i had to downgrade a gateway ma7 for one of my customers who had lost their recovery cd with vista on it. Their HD had gone bad.

The reason the XP installer says "no HD" is because the the drivers required by the gateways Sata controller (hd controller) are not preloaded on the xp install disc. The only way around this is to download the windows xp compatible sata drivers from gateways website and then slipstream them into a custon windows xp install cd. its actually not as difficult as it sounds. just download the sata driver, a slipstreaming program called nlite.

1 download and install nlite
2 put in your xp install cd, and run nlite, when nlite asks, browse to the i386 folder (your installation files)
3 you will have lots of options to choose from, but for this purpose, choose "add drivers" and select the location of the gateway drivers (c:\cabs\something) i think.
4 finish and burn the cd. then use it to install windows xp.

this little guide isnt step by step, but with a little trial and error you should get by

I'm running windows 7 32bit and want to install a SATA port expander but there are no instructions on doing it without makeing the a RAID aray.

You should have posted the model of what you want this on, usually the reason is to add RAID so its faster.

You could use USB 3.0 ports for your drives and get the same speed you will get from Sata 2 using HDD.

Try just plugging it in, run windows update, then go to ADMIN tools, computer MGNT, storage, disk MGT, see if you can see the added storage, then just Look for the unpartitioned HDD usually represented by a black header
right click it and select format.

If I am not completely mistaken you have to reinstall the OS on the SATA drive on IDE. That is because the first installation was configured for connection on a SATA /PCI then now on the SATA/IDE port converter.

Can I take an HP Storage media drive out of the server and install in my desktop to retrieve files?

The answer is Yes, only if your PC desktop board had same type of interface with the hard disk drive of server.
Commonly server HDD, use SCSI interface with variabel type of socket depending model , and also could not easily find at computer shop. while home PC are use IDE or SATA interface.

Booting Problem

Hi there.

You will need to open your BIOS settings, and change your boot sequence/priority so that it includes PCI cards. Save and exit, and see if it then boots.

If you need anymore help, or need me to clarify anything, I'll be happy to help.

Instal xp pro on sata drive

Either a) get your hands on an XP Pro SP2 CD, b) press F6 to load the proper SATA drivers when prompted (drivers located at: http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-download.pl?mdl=VGNFZ283BN&upd_id=2769&os_id=29), or c) build your own bootable XP Pro CD with the SATA drivers already slipstreamed into it by following the directions at http://maxeasyguide.blogspot.com/2008/04/preparations-for-winxp-installation-cd.html.

There shouldn't be any problem accessing FAT32 drives of that size.

Check your disk management (right-click "my computer", hit "manage" and then click on the "disk management")

It should tell you what kind of formatting the disk is, and what the drive-letter is.

If it shows as being FAT32, then you're fine. If it doesn't, the FAT has been corrupted and may require a disk rescue or some kind of disk fixing utility.

Assuming it shows the partition as healthy and FAT32, but it doesn't have a drive-letter, right-click on it and "change driveletter". Pick a letter and hit OK. It should now show up!

My new HDD isnt showing up in my computor

What type of HDD is your new one? SATA, IDE?

Do you have any USB disk devices plugged in to your system? USB hard drive or flash stick or other SD cards? Remove them and try rebooting again. These can sometimes take precedence over your HDD and your system will not boot.

Disk drives themselves do not require drivers. The storage controller (sata chipset) is what you should be looking at to determine compatibility. Do you know the manufacturer and model? (even just knowing the manufacturer/model of the motherboard would help if the SATA ports are on the motherboard).
