Are the batteries in praktica dc42 rechargeable

If you have used re-chargeable batteries in the past, yes, otherwise no. If you consult the manual, you will find the correct type of batteries to use.

Praktica 1600a

NO!!!!!

The flash's trigger voltage is much too high and will quickly fry the camera.

If you really want to use it, you need something like http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/245292-REG/Wein_W990560_Safe_Sync_Hot_Shoe_to.html
to isolate the two units.

The battery cover as bowed i need to keep my finger pressed on the cover to take pictures if i dont keep my finger pressed on the battery cover the camera swiches off

it seems the battery box are a little loose for the battery, you can add some thing(such as small piece ) between the battery and the box to let the battery and camera connect well. Don't block the joint between battery and box is OK

Praktica dcz 8lm camera: when turned on the light comes on for a second then goes straight back off again. won't take pictures or allow you to view pictures on pc

Your problem may be due to weak/worn out batteries or corrosion on the battery contacts inside the camera which can prevent the full power of the batteries from flowing into the camera. Try this free fix before you do anything else: remove the batteries and wipe the camera contacts firmly with a dry cloth (heavy corrosion may require cleaning with a wire brush, steel wool, or sandpaper). Remove any residue that may have fallen into the battery compartment during cleaning, then wipe both ends of the batteries and place them back in the camera. This cleaning clears the problem about 90% of the time. If it doesn't work for you, your batteries may need to be replaced, or the camera may have a problem that requires professional repair.

Praktica slimpix battery doesn't charge, usb connections ok,green light comes on on camera, but goes out as soon as i disconnected usb lead.

That is correct. The camera does not recharge the batteries. If you are using rechargeable batteries then you also need a compatible battery charger for the batteries you are using.

Using battery charger overseas

it's alway suggested that you simply use plug adaptors to change shape of plugs for overseas-do not reduce voltage since most all chargers including yours support 220 or 110
