Awm8143 F06 problem

Hi thanks for the reply...I had a technician come out and he took motor out and did something with points etc... Seems to have solved the frequency of the problem, although occasionally it will happen. I think you are right about the vibration causing it. I've had nothing ever go wrong with machine until after my mother ( a dedicated top loader washer only!!!!) come and stay to help out in my latter stages of pregnancy. Although I told her which load size suited which cycles...i did notice she became impatient with the time taken and started putting everything thru the rapid cycle. I heard all this noise coming from the laundry one day and this machine was bouncing around like crazy- something it has never done. I'm wondering if her misuse of the machine contributed to the tacho going on the fritz. Funnily enough my Aunty stayed last week and offered to do some washing for me....again discovered machine bouncing around she had towels in the rapid setting. machine F06'd again. I fixed that but then next load did a FA and thenF9- which i kow what is andhusband has fixed problem ( hole in small hose leading from drum to drain hose). i said to Hubby from now on...NOBODY TOUCHES THE MACHINE EXCEPT ME!!!!
Sorry for the epic I've written!!!

:-) Actually that was one of the other symptoms of the F06 problem; our machine started banging and walking all over the laundry, which it never did before.  After I fixed the timer, it never did it again.  All I can figure is that when the timer was getting erratic information from the tacho, it would spin the drum too hard or something while it was waiting for the tacho to give a signal.

Troubleshooting the problem was a real pain in the **** because each time I took the washer apart to test it, the problem seemed to magically go away.  Sometimes it would do a whole cycle without any problems, and sometimes it would F06 six times in a row.  In the end that was one of the clues that helped me figure out it was a cracked solder joint.

Anyway good luck with the yours.  Thanks for the tip about FA F9, I'll remember that one...

wow i like a customer who has done their homework :) based on all you have checked,if i were in the home, as the technician would recommend to you to have the drive motor replaced since the biult in tachometer isn't telling the mcu what rpm's it has spun at

Hi There,\r\nI have an Whirlpool AWM8143 and have just replace the motor brushes in the motor, the issue is that now the motor turns a little stops turns again stops as if the brush's are not making...

F-06 means tachometer failure.

the tachometer is located at the back of the motor ( opposite end of motor pulley), normally is black in colour and has two wires coming out of it. what it does is send pulses to the triac on the main board to indicate that the motor is turning and at what speed.

it is possible when you where fitting brushes that you either broke one of the two wires or if you removed the motor and when refitting the motor plug it did not contact properly. so before calling anyone check these wires and connections.

hope this sorts the problem for you

I am greeting a flashing code of F06 as in goes into spin cycle and it stops running.

Hi,

The F06 code will indicate a drive motor tachometer error. This means the control is unable to properly detect motor speed and the machine will shut down. If the failure occurs during high-speed spin, the door will unlock after 3 minutes.
The error code F06 is likely a loose connection in the harness between the motor and the (MCU) or between the (MCU) and the (CCU). It could also be the tachometer circuit in the motor or an intermittent internal component connection within the (MCU). Since the (CCU) has already been replaced, the failure is likely a loose harness connection or the (MCU). I recommend calling a service technician to check the connection.

Hope this helps.

My washing mascin send a code F06 what does that meens?

Heres the solution:

The MCU uses the tachometer of the motor(rpm sensor) during the spin cycle only. It returns F06 because it can't read the rpm's. (for some reason it doesn't use it during normal cycles)

What I found out was that a resistor, believe it or not was bad. A 0.01 cent part to fix a 1000$ machine. (I wonder how much money has been wasted on this problem ;/)

The resistor is the first resistor that enters the mcu board on the tachometer. (I put the mcu back up before I could take a picture)

To find it, trace the circuit from the back side of the board where the tachometer wires come in at(its the 2 lower ones out of the 5 black + green(ground)). One of them will lead to a via(thing that goes to other side of board) which leads to a resistor labeled 471(470 ohms). On mine it looked slightly charred at the top almost like dirt and I didn't think about it but I finally put an ohm meter across it and it read open(should have read something).

After replacing it everything seems to have been working fine. What happened was that the tachometer wasn't being able to be read and hence the spin cycle wasn't able to start.

Replacing the MCU board would have solved it too but at a cost of several hundred(a total rip off specially for a 1 min fix if you have that problem).

Took me several hours to fix it so hopefully this will same a few others time. You can repay me by not buying from whirlpool!

F06 error message with flashing remaining minutes

Here is what the manufacture says about F06 - my comments will follow these.

DRIVE MOTOR TACHOMETER ERROR
The control is unable to properly detect motor speed and
the machine will shut down. If a failure occurs during
high-speed spin, the door will be unlocked after three
minutes.

Possible Causes / Procedure
1. Verify the shipping system including shipping bolts,
spacers and cables are removed.
2. Unplug washer or disconnect power.
3. Check wire harness connections between the drive
motor and the Motor Control Unit (MCU), and between
the MCU and the Central Control Unit (CCU).
4. Plug in washer or reconnect power.
5. Check the MCU by looking for operations of the drive
motor.
6. Check the drive motor for powered rotations.

Phil's comments--->

If you just set the machine up be sure the shipping bolts have been removed, this is the most common reason for F06.

Other than that there is some type of communication error between the three main components (motor, Motor Control Unit and Central Control Unit) or the wire connectors between the three.

If you have had the unit a while and it is not related to the shipping bolts I would recommend calling Whirlpool

W/pool awm8143 not finishing cycle fault F06 flashing on display

I had this same problem, an intermittent F06 fault.  The F06 code means a tachometer fault.  After some fault-finding, I did manage to fix it.  If this error code happens to you and you know a bit about electronics, try taking apart the timer and looking for dry joints between the main board and the perpendicularly-mounted microprocessor board. Over time vibration can cause the soldered joints between the two boards to crack and fail intermittently. 10 minutes to disassemble plus 2 minutes with a soldering iron could save you a $400 repair bill.
The service manual is available for download on the web if you google hard enough.  If you have a CRO available, the tacho waveform should be a nicely-formed sine wave with a frequency proportional to the RPM.
