Speedtraps folder may only be found when unit is connected to a computer. I think.

My garmin nuvi 215w does not safe any address on my sd card.why?

Hello,

When you are saving POI's and favorites they will be stored on the internal memory of the GPS, these can be transferred VIA PC to your SD if you wish. You will need to go into the internal memory and copy the folder to your SD card manually.

Hope this helps!

Tip

Garmin POI, GPI, GPX, GDB and CSV and how not to be confused

GPX or CSV file can be converted to the proprietary Garmin format GPI format (Garmin Points of Interest) format using the Garmin POI loader v2.54 OR use the one bundled with the Garmin Map Source v6.15.11 at the time of posting if there is also a BMP file of the same filename then this will be added to the Waypoints Symbol.
If you put all your POI that you want to be added to the Garmin POI then place all them in the same folder prior to starting the POI Loader and they will be placed into sub-menus otherwise it will select the single file entries only.

eeb2fc6.jpg

However the Garmin Mapsource can't open this GPI format it is specifically for the SATNAV Device only open GDB, MPS, GPX and LOC files can be opened as standard. There are two ways that I know of that will convert this GPI back into CSV or the POI format if required you might like to open the POI content in the Map Source program.

First this can be done using GPI2GPS it does however cost 15 EUROs or its older brother GPSConvertor for an extra 20 EUROs will convert to all formats for all makes of device including Tom-Tom, Garmin and many others.

Secondly you can convert POI file in CSV format directly to GPX (exchange format) using the excellent GPXtoPOI Convertor v1.1.8 then import directly into the Map Source if you also want to use BMP that has been downloaded in Map Source you can replace the 8 default custom waypoint symbols located on your computer with your own or from the Tescos.ZIP file in this example that contains the CSV and BMP.

64e9e53.jpg

You can open these symbols with a graphic editor and use them as templates for creating your own symbols. You can add up to 64 custom waypoint symbols. These symbols must be in .bmp format and must be named numerically from "000.bmp" to "063.bmp." Custom waypoint symbols can be 16 x 16 pixels (small) or 24 x 24 pixels (large) and up to 32-bit color

Also check out my other POI tip HERE for help on how to create your own BMP's for use with your Garmin using Adobe Photoshop

It will also convert any GPX format into CSV format for use with the POI loader using the other button on the menu maybe this program would be best called GPXtoCSV instead to avoid confusion

.
And this one I saved for last If you want to transfer images from the Garmin use xImage and have your Garmi SATNAV connected.

a141b98.jpg

For a full list of all POI sources then visit the Gamin POI Source another great website full of loads of useful tools is www.freegeographytools.com

If you are unable to use xImage it means that you unit is not compatible for example the Nuvi 250 will not be found and you may see this window

When i power it on on battery power it opens showing the Garmin sign and after 5 seconds flashes off and them back on and keeps cycling. When I plug it into DC power and my computer it will power up and...

A file might have corrupted on the system.

If you uploaded some POI file just before the crash, it might be a defective POI database. You can delete it by booting in test mode (turn device off, press on the lower left corner, keeping pressed turn the device on, wait for the test menu to appear. If the unit stays on, you can connect it to a computer and see its memory, locating the poi.gpi file in the POI folder. Move it on your computer (just to have a backup; one never knows), safely remove and disconnect the USB device from the PC and power cycle the Nuvi).

Assuming it's not the POI, you will have to perform the Firmware Restore on your device (or you might install the newest firmware from Garmin, as well). When in Test Mode (see above), the Garmin Web Updater function should work: http://www8.garmin.com/products/webupdater/howtoinstall.jsp

Also, you may try a Master Reset:

How do you download a POI off a internet site

I tend to use

http://www.poifriend.com/

It gives you the option of sending it DIRECTLY to a GPS but to do that your GPSmust be connected to your computer and the software for the GPS must be running.

Itmay take more than one attempt (sometimes takes a couple of tries with tomtom's)

The other method is to download it as a ZIP file and extract that zip file to the POI folder on your GPS then add it manually from the GPS itself or use the GPS software to update the POI.

If its from the Magellan site then you still have similar options and the unit does need to be connected or you can also use a memory card to transfer to the GPS if its is a pro unit that is hard wired to a vechicle or boat.

Can you tell me how to increase the number of Favourites stored on my GO 740 Live TomTom. Currently holds 48 favourites, is it possible to save extra favourites to an external microSD memory card. Please...

You cant increase the 48 fav limit, but there is another way to handle the problem.

1: Download and install http://www.poiedit.com
2: Find the file Mapsettings.cfg on device
3: Open this file in Poiedit
4: Delete unwanted positions
5: Save as _fav.ov2
6: Place _fav.ov2 in map folder.

Then, navigate to poi, choose _fav and choose location from there..

When doing a map update, just copy over _fav.ov2 to new map folder...

GARMIN 260W

Hi It is more important to know how to add POIs. Here is a simple tip:

1. Create some directory especially for download. I use the following one: C:\Garmin_POI_GPS_DATA_TEAM

2. Download and save all CSV and BMP files to that directory. You may create any subdirectory and use it to save POIs for that category.
I use: C:\Garmin_POI_GPS_DATA_TEAM\Restaurants, C:\Garmin_POI_GPS_DATA_TEAM\Petrol etc.

3. Garmin's POI Loader will find all files in these subfolders and will use them to create a category.
Garmin POI Loader will search through the directory C:\Garmin_POI_GPS_DATA_TEAM and will create/transfer all corresponding POIs to your connected GPS.

4. You can remove any POI file simply by removing it from your POI folder. and re-running the POI Loader software. This POI update procedure takes about 1-2 minutes.

In summary, keep your POI files updated on your PC and run POI Loader to update your GPS or SD card via any SD card reader.

Cheers

Having problems with poi loader cant find csv file to be able to download files.unit is a garmin c31o

Here's how you get custom POI files on a Nuvi:

1. Download and install Garmin's POI Loader.

2. Create a folder on your computer, suggest Desktop, with a name like "Custom POIs". The name and location doesn't matter but you have to remember what it's called and where it is.

3. Go online and look for 3rd party POI files. Places like www.poi-factory.com have dozens if not hundreds of files.

4. Select ones you want on your gps to download. Make sure you are getting the files in the correct format. Newer Nuvis use *.csv files. Not sure if the C310 does. Download your POI files into the folder you created.

5. Plug your USB cable into the GPS and your computer. Wait until the driver finishes loading.

6. Run POI Loader and follow the instructions until you get to a screen asking for location of POI files. Point it towards the folder you created. Next tell it to load the POI files. After a few seconds it should give you a message "XXXX data points successfully loaded".

You should now be able to go to POI/Extras screen and see "Custom POI Files". Open that up and your custom POIs should be there.

Churches are not loaded as POI's. on my ONE XL-S It usuall will not recognize any church a.k.a. place of worship, even if I enter the name. Please help!!

The Points of Interest (POI) database consists of two files:
An OV2 file, which contains the POI's information ov2.jpg A BMP logo of the POI (optional) bmp.jpg
Step 1: Download and unzip the POI file.

1. Download the POI zip file. Save the file on your computer by selecting “save” when prompted. Save the file in a place where you can easily find it again for step 3 of the installation (e.g. on your Desktop or in My Documents)
2. Unzip the POI file by right-clicking the file and selecting Extract All..
extractall.jpg
  • This will run the Extraction Wizard. Choose Next.
extractw1.jpg
  • Click on Browse... and choose a location on your computer where you want to extract the files. Click Next.

  • Once the files have been extracted, choose Finish to view the files.

Step 2. Connect your TomTom to your PC

Connect your TomTom to your PC using the USB data cable or dock. When prompted if you want to connect to the computer, tap on YES.

Step 3. Copy the POI files from your PC

1. Go to the directory on the local hard drive of your PC where you extracted the files in Step 1.
2. Highlight these files then right-click them and choose Copy.

Step 4. Copy the POI files to your TomTom

1. Go to mycomputer.jpg.
2. Double-click your TomTom under Devices with Removable Storage tomtom.jpg.

3. Then go to the map directory, for example the folder na.jpg.

4. Righ-click and Paste the POI files into this folder.

5. Right-click your TomTom device and choose Eject before removing it from the USB cable or dock.

You can now use the new POI on your TomTom device via Navigate to... > Point of Interest.
