Question about Projection Televisions

No color, clear black and white picture

I have a Panasonic PT-51G52C rear projection TV. It's ten years old. I have no color, but the B/W picture is clear. I've been told that it's the "chromatic" part of the cct that's gone and the service manual would be required to diagnose further. Does this sound right and would it even be worth pursuing repairs?

I'm being told that the repairman would require the specific service manual before he could repair it. Does this sound right or could a good service guy isolate and repair this kind of thing without one? Perhaps, he's just trying to sell me a new one.

Hi,

Most professional repair persons would have ready access or the means to a service manual. Since as you posted everything works except no color indicates one and only one area of concern and this would be the chroma section. Often problem would be a single 3.58 MHz NTSC M color subcarrier (or NTSC M color subcarrier (4x 3.579545 MHz)) that provides the reference color frequency. It has also been known (for some models) that the trim cap (adjustable capacitor) would require a little tweak or cleaning (with electronic contact cleaner). There are of course instances where the color IC would be bad (not that often) and this would then be the time that a service manual or at least a schematic diagram with voltage readings be required.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

    The 3.58 or 14.3 (4x 3.579545 MHz) would be a crystal.

I think the repairman really just want you to get a new unit since the repair will also cost morethan a 200$ so it will also better for you and teh repair guy if you purchase a new unit..

Good luck.........

Hi,Yes your problem sounds like the DMD board. This is how it works: http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/dlp1.htm Basically the light of the lamp goes through a tunnel that carries a color wheel(rotating disc with a gamma of colors that creates the colors on your tv)then the light of the lamp goes through the DMD board which is a chip composed of around 2 million pixels that creates the images and colors. When it starts to fail it will create black bars, pixelation, color distortion or white dots on screens. You will need to replace the DMD board. Have a blessed one!

You need to adjust screen drives on Red Green Blue tubes ,does all 3 of them light up? Focus/screen control box is in front of TV behind front panel Turn color off then adjust all 3 tubes to where you have a black and white looking picture, now turn color back on.
