My Compaq lap top will not go to window screen it comes on to main page gives me options and that is it shuts off by it self to how do I fix

First in that Computer Setup, use HDD self test options. If results are ok - no SMART failure, no bads - it's a problem with operating system. You will have to download HIREN from http://www.hirensbootcd.org/download/
after that you will have to use yumi to install Hiren on usb

Ask for directions here. In yumi you choose Hiren, browse for the folder where you saved hiren iso image then proceed. After all is done. You will have to boot the laptop from USB with hiren.

Best is to USE mini Windows XP

Once Mini Windows XP is started go to Start, RUN
type CMD
hit enter
type: chkdsk c: /f /r
let it check
type chkdsk d: /f /r

let it check
restart
if problem persist you will have to reinstall windows

Sounds like your bios options might need to be enabled (boot up sequence) that is if you have a decent operating system otherwise press F2 whilst booting to get into bios pages,familiarise yourself with these pages and when you are confident save and exit changes or reset values to default.--good luck!

Try to start in safe mode, then change the start up options so that the computer does not reboot on error. Then you can see what the BSOD (stop error) message is and troubleshoot from there.

You could try a windows repair install.

HP owns Compaq, and compaq is mostly a dead product now and for support (free) why mess with relic iron and OS>?
the newer PC's have hot key, F10 or F11 (changed at VISTA)
its job is reload the OS, called HP restore.
if those keys fail the hdd is not good..

or HDD is bad.or someone corrupted these partitions.
or someone loaded, MS OS on it. do not load Microsoft disks her.
or was never there new, as was true on first compaq.(unstated by u)

if the hdd is bad it its bad, the bios test is just toy, we have vastly better tests disk, endless topic, can take all day to test any HDD.
the HP disk sets are not sold by HP but are 3rd party

or hope F10 works, I cant read you book to you ,and would but you never once disclosed the service tag data.

see this crude example that is a service tag.
it tells the helper what you own..
HP will ask for serial #, as that also tells options I cant ever guess.

you going reformat or repair your laptop using the recovery disk of your laptop just use that cd

Try removing the battery and starting up only on AC power. You may have a faulty battery. It could also be the power supply or a bad memory chip. If it's none of these, then it's a motherboard problem.

option1:- choose the option called safe mode. the first option. just log in and stay for a while in there and restart your computer.
option2:- choose the option start up windows normally.

Try this:

1. Turn on the laptop
2. Wait for the first page to go blank.
3. Start to press the F8 key repeadly
4. You should get a Windows Start" page pop up that gives options on how you want to start Windows.
5. If you see the Windows Logo (the screen you normally see when Windows starts) screen then just restart the laptop again.
6. Choose "Last known Good Configuration" and press Enter.

If that fails then please post back and we can try some other things.
