Question about Philips Magnavox 9P6034C 60" Rear Projection Television

2 Answers

Phillips Magnavox 9P5534 C102 I think 52" dated 3/00

We had a worsening problem with the picture shrinking to nothing then expanding over and over again when it was turned on. This lasted about 3-4 months--it seemed as it "warmed up" it would resolve itself, however, now we have no picture at all. We do not have a local repair service and would like to know if it is cheaper to junk it or try to repair it--and HOW?? do you do it? Thanks

This is a common problem with some of the older Philip Magnavox TV sets.  www.magnavoxhelp.com has a repair kit that fixes this exact problem. Its a faulty IC chip.

Hello mcat,

What you had was a High Voltage regulation problem, now your High voltage section is completely dead. It will not cost much to repair it. I would venture to say that your HV trippler and or you IHVT (intergrated high voltage transformer) are bad. I would also check the Horizontal output transistor to see if it has shorted or opened.I would not advise you to try to fix this yourself, since you don't have a local repair service center, I would suggest not junking it but taking it to a local vocational school and giving it to them.

Based on what you described I would say your TV has the "shrinking and expanding" fault. Its a common problem on that model and the symptoms can range from the video shrinking and expanding or no video or no audio....You can read more about this fix on the site www.TvRepairKits.com

If you have the following symptoms check the site www.TvRepairKits.com . They have a repair kit for this problem.

Screen shrinks and expands - may or may not correct itself after the TV warms up.

After a few days, weeks, or months of having the shrinking/expanding problem you may loose all audio/video but the power light will remain lit!

No picture or sound

Put the old chip back in...does the shrinking/expanding problem return? If so the new chip may be faulty.

If the problem stays the same - no audio/video  - check your soldering, cables, etc.

Picture shrinks and expands

Not positive but this sounds like the impending failure of a specific power supply, namely an output providing deflection voltage to the CRTs. This may be simply a circuit on the main supply or could be a separate supply on a different board than the main supply.
If it is not affecting brightness and contrast, it isn't likely to be the primary supply that is failing. I'm pretty sure it will continue to degrade.
