I have an eMachines D2823... It's older, but reliable and isnt used for anything beyond internet use. When I push the power button, no lights or power. Checked power cord and outlets. Replaced power supply with comparable 250w supply and green light on MB stays light when plugged in and faint humming sound coming from the area near the 20-pin connector. To verify I didnt get a bad unit, I re-installed the old PS, and now noticed that it also lights the green light and makes the humming noise somewhere on the MB. Removed the front cover for access to power switch in case of bad switch and have "straight wired" the black/white wires together to eliminate switch failure, still no power-up. I'm out of options without electracuting myself to repair the machine! Help?

You may have updated windows to a point that this old machine cant handle the revamp. Kick back to an older ops system, although that poses security risks. Your motherboard may also have given up. Best advice - upgrade, and retire this machine to the recycle bin.

Remove the battery and power source. Remove the RAM and hdd. Power up with the power supply and it should do something. If it does, replace the RAM and hdd it should now restart. If nothing, check the GPU.
I would suggest you try safe mode.
Safe mode is a troubleshooting option for Windows that starts your computer in a limited state. Only the basic files and drivers necessary to run Windows are started. The words "Safe Mode" appear in the corners of the display to identify which Windows mode you are using. If an existing problem does not reappear when you start in safe mode, you can eliminate the default settings and basic device drivers as possible causes.
If you don't know the cause of the problem, you can use the process of elimination to help you find the problem. Try starting all of the programs you commonly use, including the programs in your Startup folder, one by one, to see if a program might be the cause of the problem.
Follow the steps to boot the computer in safe mode with networking:
1. Restart your computer if it is powered on.
2. Tap the F8 key after your computer initially powers on.
3. Once you see the Advanced Boot Options menu you can stop tapping.
4. Use the up/down arrow keys to highlight your selection.
5. Select Safe Mode with Networking and press Enter.
6. You should see drivers loading, and then please wait.
7. You should then be at the Welcome Screen.
8. Logon to your computer using an account with Administrator privileges.
Power the unit off (holding power buttom) and selecting Power off, then simultaneously hold the "back" button and on button for about 8 seconds. When the android icon appears, press back buttom, in the menu select wipe data/factory reset pressing the home buttom and then press the back buttom, in the next screen select "yes delete all user data" pressing back buttom, and in the next screen select "reboot system now" with the back buttom and wait.
sometimes, a GFI will be controlled by another GFI. Did you "reset" the GFI ( if there is one ) in the bathroom? You have to find out where
The wires in the dead GFI come from. Electrical panel....circuit breakers. Did you flip each circuit breaker off then on to reset them ?

What happens when entering the sleep mode is the drives will be turned off and the present state will be kept in memory until awakened. While the system is active the power scheme will prevent the drives from idling down after so many minutes with the never turn off setting applied.
With the turn off drives after the default 20minutes of inactivity that doesn't mean all drives turn off at the exact same time. I've never come across any reference for changing the power plan option for individual drives. But I can point you at the guide for the power plan settings with one instruction on drive settings to apply prior to entering the sleep mode.
If your mouse and keyboard work properly with another computer or laptop the problem could be :
A) if devices are USB :
- defective USB port : chose another USB port;
- USB port inactivated in BIOS : check and activate;
- motherboard defective : replace motherboard.
B) if devices are PS/2 :
- damaged PS/2 ports : buy a PS/2 to USB adapter for your mouse/keyboard or buy USB mouse and keyboard;
- motherboard defective : replace it.
