Pressing and holding Cancel then On worked for me
I had the same issue with an HP Officejet 7310 AIO Printer/Fax/Scanner and after being told it was a hardware issue that couldn't be repaired... I fixed it! It was displaying a blue screen (of death), the error code 00000020 and an icon that matched the icon on the ON button. I also had a red camera icon flashing near the photo/memory stick slot. It seemed to be frozen - I couldn't even turn it off... and after trying the usual unplug, wait, and plug back in method, nothing changed. I called tech HP support and they suggested unplugging it, holding #6, and plugging it back in. When that didn't work I was told it was fried and I'd have to buy a new one. Mine rarely gets used, so I wasn't too happy AND this is the second HP AIO that I've own - the first one supposedly died after just two years - now I have to wonder because I actually fixed mine!
I'm not 100% sure how, but I started stabbing at the ON and # buttons - actually toggling back and forth in anger - and it rebooted! I couldn't believe it! Here' the thing, I'm 99.9% sure I was toggling very quickly between ON and #, but I think I also tried toggling between # and 6 as well, so I'm not sure which one did the trick, or it it was a combination of both, but it's functioning perfectly. Day three of business as usual and so far - so good.
I'd like know if this works for anyone else. Good luck! I was ready to bite the bullet and buy a new one... I'm so glad my anger got the best of me first.
Mine (HP 7410) worked by doing the cancel and on/off buttons. Thanks guys, this was amazing!
Same problem for me with the 7410 HP all in one. I hit cancel and power, simultaniously and the printer reset, rebooted. Several other attempts at restart of computer and unplug/restart of printer didn't help. I believe my 'puter updated windows hours before and that could have contributed.
Gret news! The same exact issue happened with my Officejet printer. I unplugged the wireless (after I got the blue screen of death which came after whirling and triwling and trying to start up at the start up screen). The blue screen had the number 00000020 and the circle. I researched on line for fixes and read this and decied if it worked for someone else, I could do it too. Well, after hours of pressing numbers and turning it off and on over and over again, my nieghbor came over to visit. I told her the problem and read the above post. My neighbor went over and pressed a few buttons and voila! It is good as new!!!! She punched the # button, the 3 and 6 buttons but also the print "OK" button and print "cancel" buttons along with the On/Off button. What ever the combination was, it works now. Thanks for the encouragement to not give up. It saved me $300 I do not have!
I got the same problem with my HP PSC 235. I got a strange whitish icon on a blue screen with a number 00000020. I called a guy and told him my problem. He said that if you press the on and cancel button for a few seconds at the same time the printer will start again correctly. It did but it seemed there was a problem with the mechanism as well. My printer worked for less than a year and had a problem. I took it to the retailer and they replaced it. Since that replacement it has been a year when this happened. Previously I owned an HP PSC 1350. It worked for about a year and 2 months.
Same problem, HP 2355p, tried everything, then was told to look at this page.
Have no #.
So I tried ON with all other buttons I could find. Suddenly after ON and OK it worked. Thanks a lot for the tip!
Ready to print christmas cards again!

I have the same issue, Hewlett Packard PSC 2355 printer. Display turns blue immediately after being plugged in, and the 00000020 shows up with an un-intelligible icon above it. No motors ever initialize. Anybody know what is causing this?
(wouldn't it be nice if the display gave us the information we needed, like "replace resistor R01" etc, sure would be better than some number HP refuses to translate into english!)
