If you JUST bought it, you are LUCKY. The best solution is to return it for a refund... and buy a RELIABLE product (other than Samsung).

For all US locations of Samsung Distributors, visit:
http://www.samsung.com/us/business/semiconductor/sales/Sales_SalesReps.html

Samsung has NO TECH Support for CUSTOMERS... except a short Request form you can fill out on Samsung Semiconductors website...... the "Contact us" page is at

Retail plus external not found by win 8

ok i know the answer.
500gb what, 2.5" 3.5" what? both have different startup currents
what USB port, USB2, USB3, usb 3c what?
Your drive is seen as removable for sure,..
but you failed to say what you have there.
USB external, ?
Estat ? port like I use that allows even hot switching.
what?
answer 1:
The USB drive will need to be formatted.
if it fails then that means.
1: HDD bad.
2: not using a power pack at the HDD case, jack at least 1 amp rated , do not run any HDD using the USB as power or it will fail.
the startup currents off all HDD are more that EVEN USB3 can handle. but USB3c might. C is for charging Cell phones .
3c is only seen on newer PC.s.

3: the HDD enclosure needs special USB driver, did you ask the maker this? whos is it. the maker was not disclosed by you.

answer 2: Esata. ill wait till later if this interface is used, like mine
i have 3TB drive on mine, and never fails. for for 5 years. 3.5"

The OS talks to your USB drive. external
if the drive busy line is true all the time the OS can not know why
at all ,how can it? (impossible)
so it tells you insert it, that is how this works.
brutal simple it is,
The busy line is true , is due many CAUSES.
1: NO 2-AMP POWER PACK THERE, AND CAN NOT GO OVER THE STARTUP CURRENT OF 4.5AMPS.
2: Drive bad, cables bad, there, usb chip bad there. usb cable bad there. or usb port dead. on pc.
3: usd drivers missing. to run this usb chip in the box.
4: system infections?

ive done this VAST times, in all ways from sunday
if I knew what you had there , ( i cant see it)
id answer shorter.
my pro grade Phantom drive runs a 2amp pack, and fails hard less.

id bet the power pack is missing or WRONG.

hi

hopefully if you go to device manager go to the top of the box and hover your mouse over the icons on the top
one of them should say scan for new devices

that may or may not recognize it

then leaving the external hdd plugged in restart the laptop

and hopefully windows will then recolonize it

hope this works for you

The computer should see drives plugged into a USB port but might not know what they are.
If the computer gives no indication after you plug in a devise check the USB cable.
Try the following 1. Go to start 2. Go to the control panel. 3 Click Add new hardware and follow the Wizard instructions.

I bought a external hard drive and want to backup my dvd's on it. What do I need in order to do this?

All you need is a good working DVD ROM and a 2.0 usb port.

Plug in your hard drive to the usb port.
It should install and be ready to use in a few minutes.
Insert your DVD's
Open My Computer and open your dvd disk (right click on the icon and choose open)
Open My Computer again but this time open your newly inserted hard drive (there will be an icon naming the drive)
Now, just use copy / paste from the dvd to the hard drive (you may have to create folders on the hdd to keep it organized)

Hope this helps.

My external Samsung HM120JC 120 GB Hard Drive not responding

Not sure what could be the problem.
There are many issues here.

- Did this drive worked before?
- If it did, was this your boot drive?
- USB cable and connector problems
- How is this connected to the drive?
- Is it in a package that came with the drive complete, or you had to install it?

My two cents... Samsung and other Japanese drives are not that reliable and if it's new, return it and get a Seagate drive. They have five year warranty and much better drives.

Free Agent

hard drives, ok your router connects via a usb yes? and by the sounds of things you unplugged the HDD and pluged in the router. ok, there could be a driver error, as your HDD and router may be refering to the same port as each other. try, restarting the computer in SAFE MODE and plugging the HDD back in, before windows starts up! now click... start > control panel > admin. settings > computer managment and click DISK MANAGMENT. descriptions of your HDD(s) internal and external and cd/dvd/br optical devices should be listed. now if the HDD (free agent) is their, right click it and click, explore. if it does nothing or comes out with and error message look to see if it had a letter assigned to it... eg: (c:) (d:) (e:) and so on. if it doesnt, then right click again and change drive letter and paths, then click add and select a letter. once this is done the HDD will have that letter assagned to it. now right click and select explore again it may error again but give it a sec and then try again, the Device WILL open (as long as the HDD hardware is ok) but if the driver is dead, which i suspect is the case, then a window (your HDD) will come up but suddenly dissapear! to get back to it just click the back button.. if your is acting the way i have described then your driver is corrupted by another or some software incedent. so go back into computer managment and click device manager and search around for the mass storage driver either in the driver area or the USB area. ((me)only own WD and samsungs) now right click te driver and look through the tabs to see if their are any corruptions or errors. fix this by selecting a different 'instance' for the device. if all fails delete the EXTERNAL HDD driver and restart the computer. other than this the HDD may be the one to blame, but i seriously dout it! good luck .
