As far as I know , there are two main methods to solve the windows password problem as follows:
1st Method:
Start system and when you see Windows Welcome screen / Login screen, press ctrl+alt+del keys twice and it'll show Classic Login box. Now type "Administrator" (without quotes) in Username and leave Password field blank. Now press Enter and you should be able to log in Windows.
Now you can reset your account password from "Control Panel -> User Accounts".
Same thing can be done using Safe Mode. In Safe Mode Windows will show this in-built Administrator account in Login screen.
2th Method:
Windows password reset software:
for example:Windows Password Reset.

The program will enable you to reset the password to blank with no -reformatting or installation. Do all the job for you automatically.

First Solution - If You Have An Account Which Is Not Named "Administrator"
With every new install on windows xp, an account named Administrator is created, this account is created automatically and has no password. So what you have to do? Well, if you haven't changed the password to this account, then you can restart your computer and reboot it in Safe Mode, pressing F8 on the setup screen, before the windows xp boot screen load. Then you choose the option, Boot in Safe Mode, if the Administrator account has no password (by default it doesn't) you'll now login to your windows xp account, once you do that, go to Control Panel, User Accounts and change the password you had on the your personal account to something you'll not forget this time. In short, you'll use the default account administrator to login into your personal account "Your Name" and change the password using the Administrator account. After changing your password, you reboot and log into your personal account with the password you chose. :-)

Second Solution - You Have Changed Your Previously Password
If you have changed the password of your personal Windows XP account, and you don't remember to what you did change the password to, and that's the reason why you cannot log into your account anymore.
You can use System Restore to restore your computer to a point where you did know your password, right before you change it. By default windows create Recover Points, to use this method you'll have to use our previously "Safe Mode" boot, in which you press F8 repeatedly on the BIOS screen. Once you are on the desktop, you click in Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore. And choose a recover point date in which you were with your old password, click in restore.

Third Solution - Using "Windows Password Recovery Tool 3.0"
If you couldn't get back your account with those two steps above, or if your account on Windows XP is by default named Administrator and not your username, then you'll have to use some softwares to get back your password or reset the password on your windows xp.
In this module I'll be explaining how to reset your password using the Microsoft tool called "Windows Password Recovery Tool".
To acesses this tool you will reboot your computer normally, click over your username, and then press Enter, then you'll be prompted with an error message:
"Did you forget your password? You can click the "?" button to see your password hint. Or you can use your password reset disk. Please type your password again. Be sure to use the correct uppercase and lowercase letters."
You're going to click on "Use your Windows Password Recovery Tool 3.0".
In the Password Recovery Wizard dialog box, click Next.
Choose one user on list, and set it to blank.
Now click finish and try to log in on your windows xp using your username and blank password.
After your log in windows, you can set a password which you can remember

Dear Tured:
If you set the password for windows please try the steps below if it is bios password you need to contact your computer manufacturer
  1. Reboot your machine.
  2. Press F8 before the Windows boot screen appears.
  3. You will be be prompted with a boot options menu.
  4. Select the Start Windows in Safe Mode option.
  5. Click through several self-explanatory screens until your reach the familiar 'Welcome' screen.
  6. Note that this welcome screen is limited to 256 colors and 640x480 resolution because the primary graphics will have been set to the Windows Safe Mode software VGA adapter. You will not be able to change this mode even in Display options, while Windows is running in Safe Mode.
  7. Find the icon for the Administrator user. If the default settings of your system haven't been changed, there should be no password for this account.
    • The Safe Mode Welcome screen might display some of the other users on your system.
  8. Login as the admin.
  9. Press Yes at the prompt asking if you would like to continue using Safe Mode.
  10. Continue on to the User Settings control panel. Here you can change any of the other passwords for user on the machine. Make any changes you want.
  11. Reboot your computer. As long as you don't press any keys (i.e. F8) during the boot-up the computer will startup normally.
  12. Login as the user for which you set the password.
