Question about Hitachi Computers & Internet

2 Answers

My external hard drive (HD) simply stopped working, should be no disk reading/ writing problems, the power is getting to the HD, but not to the drive as it does not spin, so from my own personal knowledge on the subject, I believe the problem is one of two things; firstly it is either the logic board on the drive itself has stopped working or secondly that the platters in the motor of the drive are jammed/ stuck. Can you help me? ps~ already contacted Hitachi and retailer.

Thanks for your help, I've done a quick google of the "usb drive data reader kit" - it brings up a few suggestions here and there, but have you anything in particular that you could recommend, a link to this info would be great! Also, I'm not sure if this would affect the device recommended, but I am using a mac based platform.

Many thanks for your help... it truly is invaluable!! :)

If it's not spinning most likely it has fried PCB or bad enclosure.
You can try to remove the internal drive from it and connect it directly to PC. If still not spinning then the problem is with logic board. Try to find another drive of the same model and replace the card. But as far as I know most often it doesn't work.

Sorry, but no spin, no win! Your hard drive enclosure has encountered a sever knock to cause headslap in the drive. You can rescue the data by purchasing a usb drive data reader kit. You take the drive out of the enclosure, attach the cables and plug it into a usb 2 port. You should be able to read the data no problem. Make sure you connect all cables to the drive, and it should be problem free for you.

This hard drive is faulty. The ticking sound is the read/write head banging back and forth - known as the click of death.
There are companies that can recover data from hard disks BUT it will cost you an arm and a leg for their services.

Open the enclosure.
Separate the disk-drive from the USB-to-disk-drive adapter.
Connect the disk-drive as a 'slave' disk-drive in a desktop computer, and see if you can read the files.

If not, search online for a professional 'data recovery service' -- for a FEE, they can repair a disk-drive just long-enough to copy your files onto a new disk-drive.

Cannot get external hard drive to work

- Make sure that the hard drive (HD) is properly connected to the computer.

- Try connecting it to a different computer to make sure that the HD is the problem.

- Check the Disk Management in your computer to see if the HD could still be detected. Once detected, reformat the HD and it should work again.

To check the Disk Management:

NOTE: Make sure that the external HD is connected and turned ON.

1. Right-click "My Computer" (XP) or "Computer" icon (Vista)
2. Select Manage and click on "Disk Management".
3. From the Disk Management, you will see a drive letters
4. Write down all the drive letters and then disconnect the Maxtor HD from the computer.
5. If there's a drive letter that disappears, then that is your Maxtor HD.
6. Reconnect the Maxtor HD and reformat it. You may right-click the drive letter and there's an option to format the HD.

If you're hearing a clicking sound while the HD is turned on, mostly, it's already defective.

Have a great day!

Seagate FreeAgent, 500 GB p/n 9nk2al-510 stopped working

There's not much troubelshooting you can do with a failed external disk. power off PC and hd and then disconnect all cables, wait 30 secs, power the PC on, let it boot to the OS, power the hard drive on and then connect. If the drive shows up but you still cannot access it or get weird property readings, it generally means the hd controller has failed. If the data's worth more than $1000, you can take it to a data recovery group like Ontrak or Cherry Systems, but otherwise, just get a new hd and restore whatever backups you have.

Dropped external hdd 2.0 320gb now doesn't work, is getting power.

Hard Disks are generally VERY fragile, especially the external drives simply because the read/write head inside is a very tiny substance. your case suggests that when it dropped, the read/write head might have got broken, and which means....you might have to get a new one. BUT in a very rare case however..you can do a funny and pretty nice trick, just get another one of the same type (Exactly the same type), then get A Very Good Engineer, and tell him to help you to transfer the read/write head to the former one, just for the purpose of retriving your datas...then return everything back to its normal place. HE HAS TO BE VERY CAREFUL THOUGH!!!, so as not to damage the two hard disks!
(How I wish I could be there to fix it for you, cos I've done it A LOT before...lol).
Hope this solves your problem.

Simpletech 1TB external HD

Is it formatted and partitioned?
right click on MyComputer>click manage> click disk management > see if it shows up on the bottom right of the window that opens up. If it does> right click > click format. Then you should be able to drag and drop it.

Also, did it come with software. It may require that the software be installed.

Recognized - but no mount

Don't know about the MAC part, but an I/O error implies that the either the source file cannot be read or the destination drive will not write. This is usually an indicator of a bad HDD. To check, I would attempt to connect the external drive to another computer. If it still gives the same indication, contact the drive manufacturer about data recovery recommendations
