Hello, firstly I would check the laser station shutter. When the door is closed the laser shutter must be lifted up to realese the cover of laser unit, so that laser could write on drum.
Also try to copy one page and open the door when the paper is in position beneath drum. Then look at drum, if the "picture" is on drum, that means that you have transfer issues. If not on the drum check laser shutter.
When was, last time, preventive maintenance service?
You need on regular base: - clean optics ( beneath copy glass too ) - replace charge corona - replace transfer corona - clean/replace paper pick-up, feed and separation rollers.
In most cases the problem will be solved with new transfer corona assy.
problem on high voltage unite or corona assemble
1.Clean & wash high voltage thoroughly.
2.Replace corona ware, and assemble new corona
upper and lawyer charger.
Check the drum or developer unit whether they are rotating and make sure there is developer installed. Then clean the main charge unit and check transfer corona wire if dirty or broken and replace.
its is a bad, stuck laser shutter. It needs replaced with updated one. You could rip out the shutter but it is agaist the law to remove the safety feature.
the charge corona assy. is just the silver assembly that the corona wire is inside of. to help verify where your problem is, lift up your top lid and make a "sky" shot. watch your lamp under glass, and when lamp gets about 5-7" from left, quickly open front door. now, open the copier to inspect the bottom side of your drum. if you see a good coating of toner on drum, but not on paper, the problem is in the corona assembly thats on the bottom, middle of copier directly under your drum. if no toner on drum, then its very possible its the charge corona assy. on top of your drum.
Have you tried to replace the Primary Charge corona unit? How about the rear block for the primary? Try to blow it out.... I did see in the book to try to run DPC in service mode... I also remember on older Canons that some times the wire ties may cause a problem... Also, you say that you are getting background... Is the laser good? Come to think of it I had a IR-5000 do the same thing and it turned out to be the rear corona block for the primary & transfer corona units... Good Luck
