You don't say what your actual "performance" problem is and I've never
heard of a Netopia R900... It's actually an R910, perhaps?
I tested an R910 a while back for telecommuter use. Tunneling back to
my SonicWall firewall/VPN appliance in the main office the thing had
absolutely terrible VPN throughput. I can't locate my notes at the
moment, but I was seeing somewhere around 125 Kbps through the IPSec
tunnel with a 1Mbps Internet connection on both ends and the lowest
level of encryption that I could select. Easily outrun by an
el-cheapo Linksys BEFVP41 (which had it's own set of stability
problems).
If I recall, Netopia makes (or made) a VPN hardware accelerator card
for the R910, but by the time that you buy that, you may as well get
something like a Sonicwall Tele3 (which is what I ended up doing).
Without the add-on card on the Netopia, I believe that it does it's
encyption in software and it's -slow-.
