Question about Cameras

The shutter on my Olympus OM10 doesnt work. I pulled back the lever to take a picture and the shutter button does not activate the shutter. I have had a quote which was more than the camera is worth and i would like to have a go at repairing it myself.

This is not a digital camera and it is a pretty old SLR 35mm camera

  • ron8290 Jul 18, 2008

As the estimated cost of repair is more than the camera is worth if I am not able to do it the way you suggest then I will have a go at dismantling it, any tips on what I should look out for.

Can you tell me if I can get some illustrations of the shutter mechanism.

    Thanks for you help.

Dear Sir/Madam,

This is a common problem with the OM10, and is relatively simple to fix yourself, if you are careful and handy with tools. Remove the lens and carefully raise the mirror and hold it up with tape - I use electrical insulation tape from the bottom of the mirror across the top of the prism.
Carefully prise the lower cover/floor of the mirror box up and out - raise the front first and then pull it uot in a forward direction. Again be carefull, there may be some insulating foil stuck to the underside - prise this off with a thin knife blade.
The shutter electro-magnet will be visible at the front of the mirror box floor if your OM10 is an early model, towards the rear if it is a later model. Using a fine brush or a Q-tip, swab the contacts with a small amount of iso-propyl alcohol or lighter fluid and dry (soak up the residue) with lens tissue.
This should cure the problem.

Thanks
Good Luck....

First try to remove the batteries from the camera for 30 min and then power it on and check if the shutter is working:

Try forcing gently the shutter with your fingernail while you turn the camera on.

Camera (Olympus SP500-uz) turns on, but shutter button and zoom lever don't work

Make sure you have the switch turned to "take picture (camera)" instead of "reveiw photos (green triagle)". On this one, i think it is a wheel on the top of the camera.

Only thing I can think of...

Can someone zoom while taking videos?

Yes you can. The Olympus SP600UZ can definitely zoom in to the subject not only in still but also while taking videos. The same lever(can be found on the location of the shutter button) that you use for zooming in while taking still pictures, should be the same thing that you access to zoom to your subject video-wise

You can use the lens from your old OM camera on the EVOLT E-410. You would need to purchase an MF-OM-1 adapter to make those lenses fit the new digital SLR camera. Also when using those lenses the camera would need to be used in Manual mode as there is no auto focus capability when using the old OM lenses.

My olympus om10 is in great condition... however my light meter doenst come on as of recent... i have changed batteries and still no response... also my shutter (when i press the release button) just opens...

Verify your shutter speed setting, it may be in the bulb setting or a very slow shutter speed such as 5 or 10 seconds. In the menu I think you can revert back to factory settings, most digitals offer this option.

I am sorry but that is all I can think of for a easy fix.

I hope this helps you and good luck!

Cant find self timer

On the back of the camera is a button near the right hand side ogf the LCD screen - this is the self timer button. Use the control dial to set it for 12sec or 2sec.

1 Press the shutter button all the way.
A picture is taken.
The focus and exposure are locked when
the shutter button is pressed halfway.
• When Y12S is selected: First, the selftimer
lamp lights up for approximately 10
seconds, then it blinks for approximately 2
seconds and the picture is taken.
When Y2S is selected: The self-timer lamp
lights up for approximately 2 seconds, then
the picture is taken.
To cancel the activated self-timer, press the button again.

My camera will turn on but the shutter won't open!

tiny bits of juice, remember? maybe (or I am sure) this tiny became corrosive inside the camera. (orange juice is the no.1 in my corrosive juice list, water is the least). You need to open and clean it, or a pro fix is necessary.

Olympus C-750 shutter problems

Changing the firmware won't change anything. The micro switch may be stuck in the on postition. If you are familiar with micro circuits, you could get the switch from Olympus or USCamera.com and replace it. Or, send the camera to Olympus or an Olympus authorized shop.

Shutter Problem

I had an Olympus C-3000 this same type of sympton happened to me. I sent it off to Olympus to be fixed (via local camera dealer). When it came back, after about 10 shots, it failed again the same way. Back to Olympus a second time. Came back and failed again after about 10 shots. This time dealer worked with Olympus and I was given a new reburbished camera (same model). This whole thing took about 4 months. Time frame was a couple of years ago.
