It depends on situation.

We want to change the language to English

Only Windows 7 Ultimate, Mac OSX and Linux operating systems (OS) can change the language of the menus and icons.

Most probably you have Windows 7 Home Edition
If you just got this PC you can reinstall a new operating system in English that you buy. Installing this will completely erase and replace the present system, files and programs.

Another way is to do a dual boot - a computer loaded with two separate operating systems on two partitions (C: and D: which you create) on the same hard disc. This will give you the choice of using the original OS or another one in English for example Windows XP or a free Linux Ubuntu OS. Google Dual Boot for instructions for your model of Notebook. This will involve some study and experimentation and you may lose the OS you have now, so back up your data. Here is an example of dual boot instructions:

Have a windows xp home edition, want to install windows xp professional pc wont let me install as 2nd OS,explain please

On the same machine, Windows does not tolerate second OS. Ont the other hand you can install any number of OS' if it is a Linux machine. The trick is to install Windows first and then install Linux etc. The Linux boot manager will tolerate Windows and others and incorporate then with itself. But vice versa is not possible.

Hi, I have inherited a Compaq Armada E500. Has Windows NT which I hate and doesn't register when anything is plugged into the usb. I was advised to install Ubuntu onto it instead of the Windows, but it...

Due to the specifications of the system:

http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/10441_na/10441_na.HTML

You are going to have performance issues regardless of the OS (Linux or Windows) If the system has 512 MB RAM, it will run Windows XP fairly well but slow.

As for Linux installation, that system was never certified for Linux and depending on the distribution (Version) you are trying to install, there may be issues.

As far as drive space, linux should load on any of the drive sizes listed by default. If you have not done so, remove all existing partitions and try installing for a Clean HDD.

But to be honest, a Pentium III portable system is for all intents and purposes operationally obsolete. You might want to consider buying a system rather than fight this one.

First: Shouldn't you have addressed you comments to Lexmark?

This is a site where questions are answered by people from all over the world - I doubt that there is anyone answering questions here who works for Lexmark.

Note: I totally agree with you on the fact that manufacturers should produce Linux drivers - but here's the rub - there are so many versions of Linux that a manufacturer would need to write so many versions of a driver that it would be uneconomical. It would be much easier if there were fewer versions of Linux (at least only a few core versions - say Debian and RedHat only) rather than every version of Linux requiring it's own software and drivers etc.

And yes it would be good for Manufacturers to release the code to anyone who asked for it - but where is the Commercial Security in that?

I like Linux - but I think it is about 10 years away from being a mature and user friendly Operating system. The primary need for Linux programmers is to start using Standards when developing their OS. Think of this problem as an analogy - It wouldn't matter what size or design wheel was created if it used the same axle bearings and hub as everyone else. It could still be put on the cart and used.

Just my 2 cents worth.

You know, I think you might be onto somethin' w/ this whole Scotsman thing..... ;)

You're going to fair a whole lot better running Linux on that old critter. That's why I'm still hangin' onto my old IBM Thinkpad. It's just too good a machine to throw away.

I believe you or the family would actually get some good use out of this machine running Linux on it. The Linux kernel is basically Unix. IMO, the most stable OS around. AND, Linux is open source, which means that it's scrutinized and worked on by top programmers all over the world. There's no hiding bloat or sloppy coding in open source software. Everything's "hangin' in the wind" when it comes to it's code. If anyone developes sub-performing code or distributions of Linux, it wouldn't last a day. Coders would be all over it like white on rice.

I really believe, Linux is going to take over the Microsoft and Apple markets eventually. It's been gaining ground, albeit slowly, for some time now.

Happy Computing!
BJ @:)
