Connect the Westell wireless to the Zhone as if the Westell is the PC that used to be connected to it. Then connect the PC (through any available port) only to the Westell. That's the WIRED connection. For the wireless to work, after connecting through the WIRED connection, there should be a CD that came with it that will help you configure the wireless.
I think the Westell Router/modem that you have must be the modem for the DSL connection. Charter is a cable internet service provider. You can not use 2 modems connected to each other. You have a charter modem , you can purchase a wireless router only. That will work. Click Here for more info about routers
I'm sorry to say but you cannot bypass the modem capability of the DSL Westell Modem/router because that is really made to function as a DSL modem and a router at the same time, so the best way to make everything work here since you change from DSL to Cable internet just need to get a wireless router like a Linksys WRT54G that can make everything work again like before.....
if this is the first time you're trying to connect your laptop with the gateway, if this is a windows operating system, you have to go to your wireless zero configuration so that windows can automatically configure the wireless connection of your laptop. you cann see that by clicking on start, and then run, and then type in the box services.msc, and then search for wireless zero configuration click on start if the service has not yet started. if this doesn't work check your built in wireless adapter, uninstall and reinstall it. try to access your westell by typing in 192.168.1.1 in the internet explorer address bar. the default username and password for that is admin and password. you can configure the wireless settings in the modem by going here. the WEP key for your wireless connection can be found below your westell modem/router. if i'm not mistaken this is the westell 327 versalink right? you can also find out if your laptop is connected to your modem by checking your computer's ip address. it should be 192.168.1.xx. if it's like this, your laptop is connected to your 327w. if it's a 169.xxxx ip address, you're not connected to the modem. the best way to configure your laptop and modem wirelessly is to configure it while you're connected using an ethernet cable.
you can run another ethernet cable from your westell modem to your laptop. hence, if you want your laptop to connect wirelessly, it must have a wireless card/adapter inside. if it already has a wireless adapter, it should automatically detect your wireless network and you just need to connect to it (note: you need to enter the correct wireless security/network key if you have enabled it on your modem). by default the serial number is the ssid of the router and the wireless security is disabled. but if you are not sure of your wireless security, log on to the modem's web user interface by typing http://192.168.1.1 on your web browser's address. then go to the wireless section and verify your wireless settings from there.
the wireless won't work. i have the same problem. westell modems aren't compatible with wireless function on some laptops therefore routing signal through a wireless router allows that. it can be done, i've done it but after modem was reset having issues. keep searching it can be done...
thanks for the vague and non-informative answer though whoever that was.
