Question about Air Conditioners

1 Answer

A/c ok! you are right the compressor is turning on, does not stay on, blowing cold air however it does not adjust to the settings selected and therefore does not get "real" cold based on the setting selected and that is why I thought the compressor was not working.

You may want to check the size of your A/C in BTU's to the size of the space you are trying to cool. A rule of of thumb on this would be 200 sq ft to every 6,000 BTU capacity.

Not staying cool

sounds like it is either low on Freon or the compressor is going out. The blowing ice cold is an indicator that it may be freezing up because the low Freon. when it stops blowing cold, turn it to fan only mode and see if it gets colder again. If that is the case then the unit is low on freon and freezing up. I know that sounds confusing but that is how AC works. The low freon pressure means the gas is expanding too fast and the air flow cannot take up the cold from the evaporator fast enough. Turning the compressor off and keeping the fan on will alow the room air to take up the cold.

When you first turn on the air conditioner is it supposed to blow cold air right away? Or this there a technical issue going on here? Its a used system, not new. I turned it on and the fan just blows...no...

If the compressor is not turning ON ( you should hear it, if it does), the temperature setting may be to high. Try lowering it by 5 to 10 degrees F. Also, remove and inspect the air intake filter, to see if it needs cleaning. If all this fails, either a sensor is bad or the compressor needs to be recharged with refrigerant gas.

I hope this helped you to troubleshoot the problem and hopefully solve it.
Thanks for choosing FixYa.

Kenmore AC compressor on and off while outside unit fan running

If the out door fan keeps running and the compressor cycles off that would be the overload in the compressor.
What keeps the windings cool is the refrigerant back to the compressor.
For the overload to cycle it would have to be either not enough cooling back to the compressor or high amp draw, which could be the metering device (txv or orifice) or low on charge, or other things would be a bad capacitor, sometimes a bad start relay not staying open, when compressor gets up to speed or anything causing the compressor to draw high amps.
To check the refrigerant, he needs to check the superheat at the compressor it should be appoximately 12° to15°, and next time the compressor goes off if you shut the power off and feel the top of the compressor and if it's hot 130° or higher it's probably refrigerant.

ok now you said, the system was checked to be sure the refrigerant level was full . It could also be over full causing a over preasure shutdown. The compressor has a low and high pressure switch, that will disengage the compressor clutch if it senses a over or under preasure situation to protect the system.Did you check to see if the compressor clutch was Engaging and will it stay Engaged or disengage and keep cycling like that? you Will need to get the preasures on the high and low side of the compressor from a gauge manafold set and please record the outside temp. it will change the preasures in the a/c system than i can better help with the issue you have. also a/c will always work better if recirculated air is used, because it is already cooler than out side super heated air.

my name is ron and if you get the preasures for me i will be glad to check the preasures to My R-134 refrence card

Changed compressor in my 1999 Dodge durango..doesn't blow cold

if there is a sight glass fitted check for bubbles that means it needs more freon or air is in the system or wrong expansion valve which sometimes can be adjusted, check fans if running well

It simply wont turn on

a thought is , exactly what wont turn on? the indoor blower? the outdoor fan or the outdoor compressor?. be specific for goodness sakes. i assume you mean the ac wont turn on since its cold here in fla. dont know where you are since you didnt say. if it blows but not cold then outdoor unit is problem. if air out side being discharged is cool then compressor isnt running. check caps and volts through contactor. if ok check power directly into compressor. if ok the look at amps etc.

Air conditioner problem

You may have an extremely intolerant cold control, a weak gaurdette on the compressor, a compressor motor winding issue, or maybe an oversized unit for the area you are trying to cool.
