Question about Office Equipment & Supplies
Make sure the USB ports are working: plug in something else,
such as a mouse and see if the computer detects it.
Which version of Windows are you using, older windows require
special device drivers to support USB. (Windows before XP)
If you are using Windows XP or later, check the status of
the USB ports within the "Device Manager", look for any yellow exclamation marks:
Right click on MyComputer ===>
Properties ===> Hardware tab ===>
Device manager ...
Within the device manager, right-click at the top of the
device tree ==> Scan for hardware changes ...
Now look for yellow exclamation marks again,\
and re-install any missing or corrupt device drivers.
If this does not fix it, unplug the printer from the computer and
uninstall all printer related device drivers from the computer:
Add or Remove software in the control panel,
or from the device manager by right clicking the
printer's driver within the tree and choosing PROPERTIES,
reboot the machine !
Now re-install the device drivers that came with the printer,
or download them from the manufacturer's WEB site.
Do NOT plug the printer into the computer yet !!!
Re-install the printer drivers, and only plug in the printer
when the installation program tells you to.
Some printer driver installers get confused if you plug the
printer into the computer prematurely. Windows plug and pray
detects all new devices when you firs plug them in, and tries
to assign a generic driver to the new device. IF the generic driver
is incompatible, it can conflict with the manufacturer's driver
and prevent it from installing properly.
If all this fails, call Tech support for the printer model.
Hope this works for you.

You can try making sure the cord is securly attached on both sides, and make sure the computer is recognizing the (assuming)scanner or all in 1. You might also want to try reinstalling the driver for the printer.
