We have an LG air conditioner that is about 8 years old. We had a new compressor put in about 7 months ago. Just today the outdoor unit fan has stopped working. Any ideas>

James. Unless you have a set of guages you cannot check the charge in a unit. If it is not cooling properly. first check the filters and the coil behind it and be certain it is clean. if its dirty clean the filter and if needed vacume the coils. After that check that the compressor is running? search for any leaks of freon by loooking for any oil that maybe present on any tubing to and from the compressor to the in door and outdoor coil . Also be certain the outdoor coil is clean. Also be certain that the oudoor fan is working and plenty of air is moving across the outdoor coils. If all is well it could well be that the compressor is about to give up the ghost and you will need to have a service tech check it out. If the unit is mmmm 7-8 years old it might be wise to consider a new one. If it is the compressor of course. let me knw hope this works Jon
You will have to find the contactor which is located in the outside unit. And check the voltage at the contactor, 26 v as this is the thermostat calling for the compressor to come on. You can also push in the contactor and see if the fan and compressor start. There should be an outside fuse box close to your condensing unit. Good luck
Unless your compressor is burnt up, you probably don't need a new unit. If it's a 1998 it's not that old and you can get parts, the only thing is it's probably R-22 refrigerant and they must fix the leak in the unit if that's the problem before adding refrigerant and the refrigerant is expensive.. All they have in a heating and cooling system, that needs replaced, are a few parts. Outdoor unit has a fan motor, compressor, capacitors fan and compressor and a contactor. Furnace has a blower motor, capacitor, gas valve, fan and limit or furnace control board, which they still make replacement parts for.
My advice would be to call some more HVAC companies, till you find one, that is willing to fix your unit and not replace it..
Make sure the filter is clean. When you remove the filter you should be able to see the evaporator coil. Make sure it's not clogged with dirt. If they are clean is the fan and compressor are running. If they are not working and with the cost of repair if no warranty. It's time for a new window unit.
That would be the way to go even thought the cost is high. If not you run the risk of compressor failure and the metering device may be clogged. I know the price is what has you over a barrel but, the cost to you in the near future will be 3 times as much.
Sorry I could not cure the problem over the internet
Also check around there may be someone who could do the job slightly cheaper.
if you got high volt to the outdoor machine....make sure the thermostrat is in fact on.open the control box cover to the a/c.a round or oval soda pop lookin can thing should be visually noticeable.is it blown up.thecan top will be bulged.if it is the capacitor is defective.duel capacitors control phase shift for both motors...the outdoor fan and the compressor.a big black relay with the wires comming from the outdoor fuse box should be noticeable.this is the high volt contactor, is the contactor pulled in?beets the **** out of you???grab a screw driver by the insulated handle, not the metal part of the screw driver.manually push it in.did the fan start to go???if so bad contactor or no signal from t'stat to turn machine on.if not no high volt to machine(breaker tripped or failed) or fan motor seized leading to compressor O.L.
I have run into this with the LG brand systems. try shutting power off to the outdoor unit to reset all units. If problem persists, it could have to do with a charge level of refrigerant (freon) or possibly a failed control board.
