MP470, Won't print B&W only

I can use configuration settings to tell the printer to print grayscale and to use the B&W cartridge only, but once I select any type of photo paper it insists that it must use the color cartridge. I do not want it to.
How do I print B&W photos using only the B&W cart?

My Pixma Mp 460 will not run with only one inkjet. I want it use black and white only. I am tired of paying for color ink which I do not want. I just want the black ink to print. Although I have a color inkjet it is "not recognized" "error U051." My black inkjet is new but it is no longer recognized either? ARGGGG.

I have a macbook and there aren't any printer options which allow me to choose between printing in color or in black and white. Color ink is expensive so it seems as if my printer is forcing me to waste money. Are there any sort of driver support etc. for this issue?

Hi

Have you checked the settings if they are set to Grayscale only or use black cartridge only. Options in printer settings? try to restore all to default settings and this will solve your problem.

Take care

Is there any way to get my printer to print only black copies without having to buy the new color print cartridge

Go to the printer settings - Preferences- color tab - and select Grayscale in the color selection.

Once this is done, try print a color text and see if it comes in a gray scale. This will work.

To give you a tip on this.... understand that this printer has a black ink cartridge and a tri-color cartridge. When we select grayscale, only black cartridge would be used.

Good Luck.

I want to use black ink only and stop wasting color ink

Hi,
Go to Control Panel->Printers. Then right click on your printer and select printing preferences. There you will see an option like Print in Grayscale or Black and White only.
However, please note that some printers although they are set to print in grayscale they also use the color cartridge and some even don't allow you to print in grayscale if the color cartridge is empty. Why is that? Manufacturer's way of charging you more money.

Color Cartridge out of ink - override/print in grayscale?

USUALLY there is a setting in the printer setup or propperties that you can specify gray scale right before printing. It normally is on the same screen that print preview is offered. Search the menu items for it.

Printer problems

This will sound stupid, but if you are trying to print a document in B&W with this particular model, you have to force it to print ONLY using the black ink cartridge, if you are out of color ink, otherwise, it will try to use the color cartridge by default. A highlighted word is not recognized as a black image with a colored background, it is recognized as a multi-colored image, s-o-o-o try going into your solutions menu, click on "Change settings" then click on "Printer settings" Then click on "Maintenance" tab, click on the "Ink Cartridge settings" button. From the drop-down menu, select "Black Only". Click on okay. THEN when you go to print the document go to your printer settings and click on the "grayscale printing" checkbox. Then Select "Plain paper" Of course, you have to do this each time you want to print. The MP470 is primarily a photo printer, with text and graphics abilities. It wasn't designed as an all-purpose printer... I found that out the hard way! :-) Unfortunately, this only works (so far as I've seen) if you are out of color ink... it tries to use color by default to 'create' black... I hope this helps out!

Won't print

Try the following steps:

Check for and remove any grayscale settings. Use the following steps to check this setting.
  1. In the program, click File and then click Print . The Print dialog box opens.
  2. Select the correct product and then click Properties . The Properties dialog box opens.
  3. Click the Color tab.
  4. Check the Print in Grayscale setting. If necessary, unselect the setting.
  5. Click OK to save the settings.
If this doesnot work:

    1. Open the Printer Toolbox .
    2. Open HP Solution Center .
    3. Click Settings .
    4. Click Print Settings .
    5. Click Printer Toolbox .
Now Click the Estimated Ink Levels tab. This will tell u that the cartridge might be running out of ink even if the graphic shows that there is ink remaining in the cartridge.Lines or streaks always appear in printouts when the cartridges begin to run out of ink. Replace print cartridges that are out of ink or low on ink.
  • If this doesnot work:
  • If the Print in grayscale option is not the problem and the print cartridges are not low on ink, print and evaluate a self-test page to determine if the cartridges or printer is causing the problem.
    1. Load the input tray with unused plain white paper.
    2. Press and hold the Cancel button and then press the Start Copy Color button.
    3. Release both buttons. The self-test page prints.
This will definitely work for u.
    Thank u.
