Transmits and receives no modulation out

I am not an expert but I think there can be little or no modulation of the carrier wave unless there is an audio input to the modulator. Like any audio amplifier a transmitter modulator (amplitude modulation) is quiescent without an input.

If the modulation amplifier and audio pre-amp are working and modulating the carrier wave and the antenna is ok then audio modulated radio frequency must be being transmitted.

It would be an extremely good quality CB that had a modulation meter. Mostly all they have is a meter giving an indication of the rf power being sent to the antenna and that rf (radio frequency) power would be the same whether modulated or unmodulated.
The modulation envelope, incidentally, is traditionally viewed or measured with an oscilloscope.

The indicated rf power could be verified using a field strength meter but the only practical way to discover if a standard CB is transmitting modulated rf is to listen to the transmission on a suitable receiver. If the squelch is turned down it will be obvious if the rf carrier wave is being received as the hiss would be silenced. If no audio is received it can be assumed none is being transmitted.

I suggest you try another microphone and lead and if that doesn't work it is clearly a job for a repair shop.

Cobra 148 gtl-st wont transmit but receives great

Check first your microphone

• check if TX is engaging when PTT is pushed.

• check for continuity ( mic and cable )

If you have not done these steps,

try it first, or borrow other compatible mic for Cobra 148GTL

from your friends on air.

I have a cobra 200. The receive is some distortied, Most signals appears to be overmodilating with normal volume.

When the signals you are receiving are too strong "over-modulated" turn back your RF which will turn down the sensitivity of your receiver. If they are still over-modulated it may well be the other person has their modulation turned up too high from changing the setting inside their radio, turning up their mic gain or having their power mic turned up too high.

I can receive, but not broadcast from my CB radio.

Hi mfdogman,

This problem is usually one of two things. Check the antenna coaxial cable and connections first, to be assured there are no shorts. That's one of the symptoms of receive and no transmit. The other would more than likely be a defective RF Transmitter stage in the final amplifier circuit. That could be a defective (blown or shorted) Power Transistor or IC (Integrated Circuit) Module.

After checking the antenna and coax, key the Radio up and look for any meter or indicator sign of TX (Transmitted power). If you have a power meter, use that for power and SWR (Standing Wave Ratio which should be close to 1:1 ratio) checks of the radio and antenna system. If there is no power, then you will need Technical help from a Professional at a repair facility, unless you are familar with this work. The antenna problem, if it exists...you should be able to fix.

Let me know when you get this fixed, and contact me again for more help. Thanks.

Regards, Bill

Problem: TR602 is oscillating
Cure: Replace C602 with a .01uF cap {Cap is located in the power supply board}.
RG 66,99,DX2517 Replace Q54 2SB754 60watt 7A with a higher power 2SB817 100 Watt 12A. Derating of this component will cool operation, provide better voltage stability, decrease wobble, allow voltage increase to 14.5 volts comfortably. (replace 10 volt caps in this section of the radio to a minimum of 16 volts before increasing supply voltage to this level)and provide faster swing rise time, Replace Q37 2SA473 to a 2SA1012-0 or ECG153 this will improve the clarity and volume of the modulation and it will also run a lot cooler.

No receive cobra 29 ltd classic

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, pls confirm that there is modulation (transmit audio). The reason I asked is if IC4 (TA7222P) is blown, then the radio would have no audio amplifier which would explain no receive audio. Additionally, the final and pre-final (TR15 & 15) gets is modulated TX+12 through D8 from T1 which in turn is the output of IC4 through C48.

Perhaps a schematic diagram may be of further help.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.

No modulation lots of signal

It really depends on what he messed with while he was inside the radio. If he accidentally turned down the rf output power, you can use an inline rf meter and then tune L37 and L38 for max rf output.
