I am assuming you want to re install or upgrade your operating system without losing your files. If this is the case the solution is simple. Purchase an external USB Harddrive Large enough to hold all your files. Plug it in and save all your files to it. After you re-install or upgrade your operating system simply copy your files back. You can purchase 500GigaByte external harddrives for under a hundred dollars these days at best buy or circuit city and even cheaper online. As an added bonus you will have a full back up of all your files in case of future catastrophic harddrive failure.

I hope you found this useful. If you did please don't forget to rate me FixYa.

Thank You,

I have a emachine unplugged it plugged it back in now its telling me to reboot and I can't get my computer to work how can I reboot without disk?

It sounds like your hard drive is not being recognized. I hope you didn't unplug it while it was still turned on as that can cause hard drive corruption. The hard drive or some other critical component may be failing, or just the OS or hard drive corrupted. If you have files that you do not want to lose, you could try this... Pull the hard drive out, and use a "USB Hard Drive Adapter" (available fairly cheap online) to connect the hard drive to a friend's computer, and save all the personal files (documents, pictures, etc.) you can to a folder on the friend's computer or an external hard drive.
Then, you could try to do a Factory Restore on the computer, and if that works, copy your personal files back to your newly restored computer.

Good Luck

Hi, My daughter has an HP XT963 desk top pc running Win px pro. Her pc freezes up at start up. We tried safe mode and after loading 3 or 4 files, it freezes at (hdcom.dll?) Is there a way to recover...

If you restore the computer you will lose the files. What you can do however is try to repair the corrupted files by following these steps:
reboot your computer and hit f10 at the logo
you will then see the advance troubleshooting menu with multiple options
arrow down and choose safemode with command prompt and hit enter
it will go through a series of files and then take you to something that looks similar to this C:/
at the C:/ type the following
chkdsk /f and hit enter
This process will scan your drive for errors and attempt to fix them automatically, it will take quite a while for the full scan to run so just be patient. It could take up to 2 hours or so. Once it completes the scan it will give you a log of sorts of the files that it repaired and such. You can then type exit and your system will reboot. If all goes well and the needed files were repaired you should be able to boot up into Windows with no problems. If you complete this process and are still having issues please let me know and I will assist further. Please leave feedback as well if you found this helpful at all. Thank you so much and good luck!

My Compaq Presario would not boot. I happened to lose the recovery disk (I put it away in case something like this would happen, I end up losing it anyway...smh). I have tried everything, from USb booting...

Of course. You can use some live linux distro (Ubuntu in example) or Hiren's Boot CD (one of the best tools, download here: )

My dell c 521 is "split" - his n' hers can I combine into one usre without losing info

The answer is "YES!" If you have two (2) accounts open on one (1) computer; when closing one ("Deleting") an account, you will be given the option of saving" Files, Data, Pictures etc" to Folders that will be placed on the open account's "Desktop". You can also transfer Files etc, to the User account: example; Move, Send to: open "Documents" in (Active) "User's" account, and "Drag & Drop." To start, go to: Control Panel, change User's account. There are other options aswell; change (Password)... "Apply, and click "OK! " I hope this helps Ya"

Need help clearing the garbage slowing my CPU w/o losing my files

Just copy any wanted documents (pictures, music, videos, etc.) onto your external hdd. As far as Norton or any other programs, you will need to reinstall these after the restore.
After you reinstall the os just copy your things from the external hdd to the appropriate folders.

Keep losing wireless network on laptop. completely disappears and can not find it to reconnect

I was having the same issue with my notebook. I was losing connectivity to the internet at both home and office through my browsers and outlook consistantly after boot up for approximately 10 minutes. The only way to get more connectivity was to reboot my machine (ten more minutes). Emachines help desk was no help. Their fix all response was to format the harddrive and start over. What I did to fix it was:

Control Panel
Network Connections
There, I disabled the wireless network connection and waited for the hourglass to go away. Then reenabled it and have had wireless connectivity since.

Good Luck ;-)

Windows password

Losing your Windows password can be one of the most frustrating experiences you encounter. With so many passwords to remember, it's a miracle our brains don't crash or need to be frequently defragmented. Fortunately, we aren't so hopeless and neither is losing your Windows password. Retrieving a lost Windows password is as simple as following a few easy steps.
----->**this process only works for windows xp , please state if you have another operating system installed*
Step1 Put your Windows XP operating system CD into your CD-Rom drive and start your computer.
Step2Choose the specified key to run from the CD. In most cases, a message will appear which instructs you to "Press any key to boot from CD." Step3Wait for Setup to check your system and load the appropriate files. A message will appear indicating this action. Step4Press "Enter" to setup Windows. Press F8 to accept the Licensing Agreement, then choose the "Repair" option on the Setup screen. Step5Allow the Repair function to complete its process. It may takes a few minutes for Setup to copy all of your files. Wait for the computer to reboot. Usually a message appears indicating that the computer will reboot in 10 to 15 seconds. Refrain from pressing any keys after the computer starts again. The computer will reboot automatically. Step6Watch the bottom left corner of your screen for the "Installing Devices" message. Press "Shift + F10" when you see this. A command console will appear allowing for access to a number of system functions. Step7Type "NUSRMGR.CPL" and press "Enter" after the prompt. This will give you graphical access to the User Accounts in your Control Panel. Step8Select the account that needs to be changed and alter your password or remove it altogether. Type "control userpasswords2" if you want to log on without using a password. Close the windows and exit the command console. Enter your Product ID when prompted. Step9Log on to your system according to the new password option you chose in Step 8. This process does not damage your previously saved files and settings, so they should still be intact.

Need to boot my computer without losing data. Sony no longer have recovery disk. Is there a way to do this?

There are a couple of options for you. My main suggestion (assuming that it is your OS that is blown away) is to get a copy of KNOPPIX. It is a complete Linux based operating system that runs directly off the CD. This way you can still access the files on the disk. It will take a little learning on how to do it, but is the easiest.

The other way would be to pull the hard drive and get a USB adapter to hook it up to another machine.
