My washer is also making a noise (sqeeking/clunking at one point in the tubs rotation) but it doesn't appear to be the rear bearing, which seems tight and in good shape. There seems to be excessive front back play in the wash tub without the bearing moving, almost like the tub has come loose from the bearing.

Myne just basically exploded today, something came apart internally and broke trough the back of the drum trough the plastic, I guess I will have to replace the machine, aprox 5 years old.

  • juancg2101 Nov 09, 2008

Well I said it exploded, and here is the proof, I don't think a five year old machine should rust to the extent to brake the back bone of the drum, see the images. Has anyone ever seen this happen? Is this a comon problem or a manufacturer defect? Of course Sears says it has no warranty, and since I took it apart myself, I am on my own?

Have the same symptoms than "pacossy".
What have you found to be the problem ?

  • Anonymous May 17, 2009

I have the same problem. Exactly the same issue with the drum and my pictures would look exactly like yours.

this is the response from sears

In follow up to your enquiry I havehad our Technical team in conjunction with Electrolux look further intoyour concern regarding the repair of your washer. Since theintroduction of this part assembly into the Kenmore and National brandline in 1998, we have sold over 500,000 units. Although some occurrencessimilar to what you have described have been reported, it does not showup as an epidemic part failure and is not covered under warranty or recall. We have had a few cases where the spider would oxidize or corrode due toa reaction caused by certain chemicals in the water, primarily awell water source supply. We are unable to determine why it wouldoccur on your particular model. The part you are referring to isattached to the spin basket and is factory balanced before shipping whichis why it is not sold separately.

To complete the repair we would recommendthat you replace the complete tub assembly for $229.99 since you must takethe front and rear tub apart in order to replace spin basket and you mostprobably will need a new gasket.
    See photo attached.

    Tub part number ........
    DESC TUB KIT RT26 100 RT2622

As always, if we can be of assistanceplease call 1-800-4-MYHOME an we can order the part or dispatch one ofour factory certified technicians. Unfortunately the expense for this isnot covered under either the Kenmore or manufactures warranty.

I hope this answers your question.

Wow! Mine also looks just like this - a large hole in the back of the spin basket. Same timing too - about 59 months for me.  All of a sudden, during the spin cycle we heard a huge bang,...and then the banging continued. There is no way I'm spending $200 + labor to get his fixed. If the part is only going to last 5 years, then I may as well go ahead and get a new washer....and it definitely won't be this make or model!

Wow mine looks just like yours. I bought my machine in 2003. I have searched several places where they stock these parts in canada and they range from 200 - 500. This particular washing machine is actually made by Frigidaire, and is a common problem with all of them. I spoke to one of the appliance stores and they recommended a new washing machine. Since Sears just keeps giving me the run a round I will no longer be purchasing anything through them. I have bought most of my household items, and appliances through them, but no more. I am sure the Canadian papers would love to hear all the complaints against sears and there products.

My kenmore 970-38712 washer makes a terriible banging noise on the final spin.
This link shows you your tub parts. There are 2 springs and 2 shock absorbers. Those may be bad broken or loose and one other thing to check is make sure the inside drum has not broken off of the spider assembly in the back. An easy way to check that is open the door and grab the front lip of the metal tub and try to move it up and down, you will notice a huge amount of movement if it is broken loose. The videos I posted apply to all front load washers, The first 2 are great on diagnosing and the last one shows whats left of a broken spider gear. If it is the spider support assembly then you will have to replace the entire inner tub and that is about $400 just in parts.

Kenmore model 970-C85072-00

There's normally a plastic triangle piece you have to remove to slide the bearing off. Otherwise you've got 2 1/2 inch bolts holding the bearing on the back depending on how old it is. You gave a model number for a washer.

Kenmore front loading waster. Model: 970-c45062-10. Loud whirring noise during spin. I can't seem to find this model listed anywhere to determine the replacement part I require. I even called Sears part...

You have a bearing problem. The bearings can be removed, there are 2 bearings and 1 rubber seal plug. The tub can be removed from the washer and split into 2 pieces (rear portion and front portion), and the bearings removed using a large hammer and a pipe (put the pipe in the hole so it contacts the bearing and hit the pipe with the hammer, then flip over the tub and do the other bearing - there are videos on You tube). The bearing part number for this washer are TSB 6306-2RS-CTS (smaller bearing) and 6307-2RS-CTS (the larger one). These are sealed bearings, and can be ordered off ebay or a bearing store.
